Hi All

Taking Mrs Manks to London for her birthday and want to stay at a decent hotel. I have looked at the Savoy, but I see that it is getting some poor write-ups on Tripadvisor which APPEAR to be genuine.

We stayed at 1 Aldwych a few months ago and it was pretty good. However, does anyone have any suggestions for somewhere of a 4/5* standard that is genuinely good please? I get the impression that the Savoy and Ritz are trading on their name and not offering the experience one would expect.

Many thanks in advance.

I work closely with the Red Carnation group, a few they own spring to mind:

Chesterfield Mayfair (4 star)
Milestone (5 star)
41 Hotel

Westbury?

La Suite is a nice boutique type, if that floats your boat?

They do the brunch as a separate option now, for people not staying. £75 a head, IIRC.

Hello

I stayed in the Athenaeum and the May Fair over Christmas, both were superb and less than half the price of the Ritz or Savoy or Berkeley or Lanesborough or Dorchester or Claridges...

They are not quite as grand as those mentioned above and some say they are not true 5 star hotels but when you book them through LastMinute as top-secret hotels and you get them for £130/night I dont mind that. The others you won't get for less than double that....

The Athenaeum has the (in my opinion) massive advantage of everything in the minibar apart from the booze being free and a nespresso machine in the room again free,

Both hotels had either Bose or B&O iPod docks and flatscreens.
The Atheneuam have a free DVD loan service and I was astonished to have it delivered to my room with a huge bowl of free Popcorn !! It was such a refreshing change to the ''charge you to breath'' attitude most hotels seem to have...

The May Fair charges extra for the spa so watch-out for that, I thought it was a bit out of order to be honest. The May Fair Bar is lovely but very expensive, no worse than anywhere else in Mayfair I encountered... Keep your eyes peeled for celebrities

Both are in a superb position either on or just off piccadilly - waking distance to basically everything, Soho, Covent Garden, Buckingham palace is a 5 minute walk from either through Green Park, West End, Theatre Land... You name it

Give me a PM if you would like any further info on either or help identifying them on LastMiute - It's easy when you know how....

If you're hell-bent on a 5 star deluxe then you'll pay for it, but why not give one of these a try and spend the £150/night you save on Michellin-starred grub......
(and a weapons-grade cocktail or three in either Mahiki or Trader Vicks....)

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

Stayed at Browns in the end. Very nice and the afternoon tea was epic.
