Looking at driving down to the south of France in the summer, but wanted to make a bit of a tour of it. So, I'm thinking of taking 3-4 days each way and staying down there for a week.

I know there are a billion amazing places to see, but where would be worth going out of the way for?

I've thought about Brugge, I've been before and would love to go back, but would also like to see new places.

The plan would be to cross over to Belgium and travel down the east, so Germany, Switzerland, Italy. I'm also going to try and find a route off Motorway. Allowing us to stop if we see anything interesting etc. Then cross directly to the place in S.France for a relax.

So, 3 nights, in summer, to stay somewhere on the (indirect) way to the South of France, where would you go?

Down the autobahn to below Cologne, Baden Baden, then U500 via Triberg (worlds largest cuckoo clock) to Switzerland.

Any more?

I reckon no more than 7 hours on the road a day, which limits us some what. We're not looking at 'starting' the trip already in Europe. Basically going to get to Brugge after work on the first night. So we get the train out the way.

A few places we've thought about:

Brugge
Luxemborg
Strasbourg/Stuttgart
Zurich
Torino

A good place to stay in the North of France?

Want to get a late crossing on the Eurotunnel to get into mainland Europe a night early. So it will need to be about an hour from Calais.
