Planning a trip to Vietnam towards the end of March with the wife. We're flying into Hong Kong, then onto Hanoi, travel down by train, Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh (by air), then back to London, backpack job! Plan is as follows:

HK 3 nights
Hanoi 1 night
Halong Bay cruise 1 night
Night train to Hoi An - 1 night
Hoi An - 2 nights
Night train to Nha Trang - 1 night
Nha Trang - 4 nights
Ho Chi Minh City - 1 night
TOTAL 14 nights

This is quite flexible, we can add a couple more nights if required and we can change the number of nights spent in each of the locations - what are peoples' views on this and more importantly, what hotels do you recommend? We like luxury hotels but obviously not £300 per night ones, more like £150-£200.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers in advance

The only one I can help with is Ho Chi Mihn.
I would suggest the Rex Hotel http://www.rexhotelvietnam.com/en/Default.aspx
Many years since I've stayed there, but it used to be wonderful.
It's where the foreign correspondants would be holed up, during the war.
"5 O'Clock Follies" originates at the Roof Top Bar - a beautiful place for drinks.
1 day in HCM would be too little in my view. You need to get out to Cu Chi etc.

I would suggest

1 night in Hoi An
2 nights in Nha Trang
4 nights in Saigon

The Rex is under-going massive refurbishment at this moment, so expect brick dust in the weeties in the morning and hammer drills through the night.

Hundreds of decent hotels in Saigon at half the price of the Rex, do search on line to look for them. If youre booking yourself then $30-50 a night will get a decent hotel room with AC and very clean inc good breakfast.
