Passport Validity

My wife has an Irish Passport which expires in April, ie only 3+ months left on it. I know many places require at least 6 months life left on your passport; anybody know does this apply to EU countries? Thinking of a surprise short break to maybe French or Spanish destination in the next couple of weeks, and don't want to spoil it by suggesting she renew her passport right now!
