I have taken the plunge and booked a pitch in Cornwall in August for a fortnight as I plan to take my 3 children camping for their summer hols and this particular camp site has been recommended to me by a workmate.

So I have the pitch and I do have a 3 man pop up tent and my own sleeping bag but obviously I need something bigger with space to hang around in if/when it rains.

So ladies and gentlemen of PH, your advice please.

I thank you.

NB Not done any real camping since I was 20 a very very long time ago.

How much have you to spend?

I'd say get a 5 man or so large tunnel tent, preferebly a Vango or something similar.

This is a pretty decent tent, easy to put up (although not as easy as a pop up tent) room to stand up and plenty of storage space.

Thanks.

Looks good but the kids all want separate bedrooms and to be honest I need to keep them apart. The Outwell Hartford XL looks good and can be had for £350 and the Khyam Quebec which is £299. I have heard of Outwell as I have one of their pop ups which is good but not Khyam.

There is an Outwell Nevada on eBay currently at £150 secondhand and all of these are 8/9 man thus have 3/4 sleeping pods.

What do you think.

Oh! as an aside would I realistically get a tent and all the bits for 2 weeks away in the boot of my E36.

Sorry, camping newbie here, cheers.

We have a kyham it's huge. Really easy to put up. A bit like an umbrella for the central living area. Then seperate poles for bedroom and canopy. It's well made, appears better than our old outwell. The only draw back as it is such a big tent it takes a massive amount of room in the car.

Why not go and get them a tent each, just a one man pop up,about £30 each.

There's an idea. The pitch is 10m x 10m so it could look like a mini festival. laugh

Many of the reviews for the Khyam seem very good but it is the space in the car that worries me. Why oh why did I sell the Discovery 3.

I can only recommend what I have, this ... Vango Maritsa 700

Excellent tent, easy enough to put up with 2 (with practice), lots of space and storage pockets.

I have a Vango Diablo & would recomend it. Easy to put up and very spacious.
Have a search for Vango Diablo 900.

They may have to compromise with the sleeping arrangements. It is a tent after all.

We bought a (cheap) big tent and it was pain to put up and took up a huge amount of room on the site. A few of my friends have gone for a smaller tent even with 5 of them and found it ok.

Also no way you will fit it all in a E36 without a roof box.

I would also recommend going for a weekend/night before the main holiday, maybe late June/early July before the school hols just to get your any niggles sorted and check you have everything.

i tend only to camp at festivals so view tents as a single use item, £60-70 on ebay will get something large [2-3 bed compartments and a central section] and waterproof and eminently disposable. if i get 2 trips out of one then happy days.
