I know there are a fair few threads on American Road trips on here, but I need some advice.

Me and a friend are looking to do a road trip in the summer, 2 – 3 weeks I think.

I want to run my ideas past people and see what people have to add and what they think or if there are any must see sites.

Option 1, fly into Chicago and drive Route 66 to LA, possibly San Francisco but the usual places on route, Grand Canyon, Vegas, etc then fly home from LA.
Problem as far as I can see here is the hire car issues, ie returning it to a different depot than collection.

Option 2, fly in to LA, then do a bit of a lap, some of route 66, Vegas, Grand Canyon, San Frasisco then back to LA. Then either fl home or take an internal flight and go to New York or somewhere else.
This is my preferred option as the hire car costs should be less meaning I can get a Vette or Mustang possibly.

Option 3, any ideas will be listened to.

Of course you realise you can't actually drive all of Route 66 anymore . . . .

I did a road trip thru' California a few years ago, starting in Frisco, then down the coast road as far as San Diego, then inland, to Death Valley, Grand Canyon and Vegas (can't remember what order they were in now!), before heading back to Frisco. I was a great trip!

You can do one way car hire, but of course it just costs more!

I've done Pittsburgh to Chicago then Route 66 to LA and San Diego with offshoots to the Grand Canyon and Austin in 3 weeks. It's lots of driving, but it was certainly fun, so don't expect a casual drive. It's pretty challenging to follow the Route without the specialist map series as sometimes it's brilliantly signed and other times not at all. I'd also say that an LA - Grand Canyon - Moab - Bryce Canyon - Zion - Vegas loop is well worth it if two weeks is more your ideal time horizon.

Did a 'loop' of California last September over 3 weeks, started out in SF, Sanoma, up to South Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Mammoth Lakes, Death Valley, San Dieago, Santa Monica (LA) then 4 nights spent travelling up highway 1. Superb trip and would throughly recommend it. Picked up the car in San Francisco city centre and dropped it off at the airport at no extra cost, was much cheaper booking the car through Netflights than it was direct.

As far as I know it becomes more expensive when you want to pick up and drop off cars in different states but is do-able.

If you can, fit in a visit to the Grand Canyon, I was in Vegas last weekend and snuck off in a rental for a viewing. Holy crap, it's simply incredible, words can't do it justice.

One thing to bear in mind on a rt 66 trip, which I have done, is that the distances between cities can be vast... hundreds of miles...
