Stag weekend in Edinburgh
Discussion
Gents, I have been charged with organising a stag weekend in Edinburgh.
Having never done this before I'm open to ideas from those who are veterans of such events and moreover the planning of them.
I think I've narrowed down the areas I need to look at into:
Travel arrangements to Edinburgh on the Friday, returning on Sunday.
Accommodation - There will be circa 25 people.
Daytime activities - To be done whilst drinking.
Evening activities - Bars, clubs, strip clubs with drinking games and other debauchery.
Has anyone here organised a stag party in Edinburgh and could you give me any tips etc for making it a good weekend?
Also, any general tips and ideas are welcome!
Cheers

Massively poncey website, but a good place for pool and beers and sport watching during the day.
Grassmarket/Cowgate is your hunting ground for most boozing and accommodation, George St is cracking down on large groups of blokes blatantly on stag dos, so you'll either need to split up or acquire some female company to infiltrate.

25 is a lot for accomodation, I attended one in Edinburgh where accomodation was of the Cheap Hostel Type.
Depends on the group of course, but some of ours were used to the nicer things in life & decided after they arrived that they weren't staying there so decided to go & find their own hotels!
Personally I'm fine if it's just somewhere to get my head down.
eta Last time I was in Ednburgh with a group we took a couple of appartments from these folk http://www.fountaincourtapartments.com/grove.aspx
They were reasonably priced & fairl high spec, breakfast was included which we got by way of a voucher for the cafe down the road. Where we were they had three blocks of appartments with about 8 in each

The apartments are nice, sleep loads, and you can usually negotiate a reduced rate at the weekends, or well you could, when i last went.
Cabaret Voltaire is open ridiculously late without being a s
tty dance club. Top top place for a group of blokes, provided you can keep your group size approaching the door to under 6. Lots of variety there, different music, different bars, different fun to be had.....
Last stag do I had there involved staying in apartments (very nice flats) just off easter road. If the idiot stag had asked I would have a) recommended somewhere just a tad closer to town and b) somewhere in a neighbourhood with a nice pub and c) in an area where you're a tad less likely to get mugged.
The stag also organised a mini highland games near south queensferry, which was an absolute hoot, even though it cost £25 a head.

Is there anywhere that you would advise staying? Particularly that can cater for a group of 20-25? At the moment I'm feeling drawn to hostels in the Grass market kind of area purely to keep the group together.

20-25 people is a hell of a lot to accommodate! You're looking in and around the right areas already. From vague memory, there's now a few travel lodge type places opened up out towards Corstorphine which is a nice ish part of town, has bars you can actually use and it's on the main bus / taxi route back from town to the airport, walkable if you're not s
tefaced.
Avoid lochend apartments, who I've seen tied up with Edinburgh stag dos. Nothing wrong with the apartments themselves, but the location is absolutely dire.
Another suggestion would be to look up all the B+Bs on Old Dalkeith Road / Dalkeith Road and vicinity. Again, there's millions of them. You wouldn't get everyone in one B+B, but you could probably get you all in 3 or 4 adjacent ones. And you're still on a main drag and no more than 30 mins walk into town. Addresses in Polwarth have a similar function, as does Bruntsfield.
Wouldn't stay in any of the Leith Links B+Bs - again, loads of them, but not great for late night drinking and some of the surrounding area is a bit nasty.

Should do the job, about £200 a night for 4. Grove Street one is handy for the Grassmarket

Out of interest we're booked in for the first weekend of Fringe.
Is it going to be hideously busy and we won't be able to get in anywhere?

Shouldn't have too many dramas getting into places for fun and pissups, provided you break up into smaller groups.
If you go to places like the gilded balloon or the city chambers on george street in the morning / pre-bought day or two before, you should be able to get some tickets for various gigs / comedy stuff easily enough. If you look for any plays written by a chap called john godber (used to be hull truck theatre company, which I think has gone under) then you'll easily get tickets and see some of the funniest plays ever written - slow motion rugby / bouncers. They're just genius and have a stag do sense of humour.

Grove one was the one I linked, we got ours much cheaper, £120/night for 2 bedrooms & sofa. They have 40 apartments at the grove street site alone.
Give them a phone, job done.

Cheers so far guys!
Could try http://www.canoncourt.co.uk as well, decent enough walk to the main drag with plenty of pubs on the way. Was reasonable the last time 16 of us stayed
