Hopefully the good folk of PH can help me out here smile

Myself and tweo friends are looking at doing a little road trip this summer, each of us taking our own cars. As such we are looking to minimise accomodation costs as much as possible to spend the rest on fuel & wine biggrin

Current basic route is;

Calais>Le Mans>Milau>Mount Ventoux>Monaco>Chamonix>Nurburgring>Calais

Google has that at 2.5k avoiding tolls&highways.

Not overly bothered about quality of accomodation, as long as it's safe and clean.

Ta!

Camping surely! €10 a night each. Just take a camping guide and when you're getting close to having enough driving for the day have a quick look at the guide and find the nearest camp site. Easy. smile

I know from previous experience of camping in the Alps that it was wise to pre-book, not sure how much that would limit us but then there is always finding a random field!

Accor group hotels - from the very basic (Formule1) upwards.

I did a bit of a road trip 3 years ago down to Chamoix and then Grenoble. I stayed in Etap hotels and found them to be basic but clean and good value. I think I paid around €30 per night.

i went on a euro trip in a clapped out escort at the end of 6th form. We took tents and booked campsites for where we were going. we did sleep in a field a couple of times though.

We camped at the Ring and stayed in hostels for the other places on our Euro trip. We just searched Hostelworld or HostelBookers websites and usually found something cheap enough. Everywhere was clean and usually had parking either on site or in the street outside.

Campaniles - all over France.

Cheap but reasonable quality, restaurant on site - used for last 15 years on and off - never had any issues

You won't need to book camping pretty much anywhere over the summer (in my experience). We did a mega road trip last year and winged it round Europe the whole way with no problems.

I like the Campaniles, I like the outside landing and outside doors and the buffet style eating and local foods they have on.

Worth trying the Logis De France website too, lots of cheapish ones and nicer than formula one types

But for minimum shillings camping has got to be the crack.

I have done trips like this many times and have never booked a site. This year we were in Menton (next to Monaco) and got a pitch at the only camp site for miles in August and with a sea view, oh and electric hook up. Municipal sites are basic cheap run council sites that are always sign posted and cannot be booked so turn up and take your chance.
