Hi everyone,

We've just booked our honeymoon in a 5* Iberostar hotel in Playacar, Playa del Carmen. 11 nights in the middle of Oct.

We're going all inclusive but may eat out once or twice in playa. Just looking for a bit of advice of things to do and places to eat. Looking at doing a fair few excursions during our stay like Chichen itza, swimming with dolphins etc.

Also, what happens with regards to being on a honeymoon? Can we expect upgrades? Do we just have to mention it wherever we go and hope they give us extra stuff?

I went to Mexico last year and loved it, best holiday I've ever had. Tell the airline you're going on honeymoon and they'll bring you some bubbly in-flight.

If you don't go to the beach at Tulum you've missed one of the worlds top 10 beaches - miles of soft white sand and warm caribbean water - here's a poor quality picture taken at 2pm in the afternoon with the temp in the low 90's

Chichen itza is VERY touristy and with hindsight I wouldn't have gone and the ruins aren't as old as you'd think...less than 1,000 years IIRC. Still, you may as well go as you wont be back in that neck of the woods in the near future presumably - just don't expect to much and you wont be disappointed. It is a big sprawling site though.

Swimming with Dolphins is OK.

Do the Speed Boats out to the mangroves trip though. Its based in Cancun and you and your partner get your own speed boat and then convoy at speed out to the mangroves. You then all tie-up boats and jump in for some snorkelling on the worlds 2nd biggest reef. Cool if you like speed boats. No training required for either the boats or the snorkelling and they supply the snorkel gear.

Anything else PM me.

We were there late 2009. Nice hotel, albeit one of those slightly unsual ones where there are 4 different grades side-by-side (gets more opulent as you go left, looking from the sea!). You'll have a great time, I'm sure.

Stuff to do:

Big water park nearby is a must-do http://xcaret.com/. Bobbing around in buoyancy aids with snorkels & masks feeding the fish etc.

Mayan ruins are worth visiting, too. If you only do one, then Tulum is the most scenically spectacular, but far from the best site in archeological terms http://gomexico.about.com/od/ancientsites/p/tulum_...

Watersports aplenty, of course, diving, snorkelling (not really off this hotel though, as the beach is a bit exposed IMHO) etc. An unusual one is to go and swin in sinkholes like this: http://www.mexconnect.com/articles/3026-did-you-kn... which have a proper name I've forgotten - several along this coast.

Lots of bars, clubs etc in PdC and Cancun that theyw ill punt at you at the hotel.

BTW the evening entertainment's unusually good at the hotel, we found - heavy on the cheese, but nontheless, still fun.

Enjoy!

ETA apropos nothing just remembered the sinkholes are called Cenotes.
