There's a few of us going going over to Amsterdam in May.

Any recommendations of places to stay. Just needs to be safe and clean really, and close to the action.

Cheap and cheerful is fine.

Dorm type rooms are also fine, say for 6/8 people?

Recommendations appreciated!

The public transport is excellent, and there are lots of night buses and even a regular night train out to the airport. So you don't really need to be in the centre, which is rather expensive, since you'll have to share a bed with a lady of negotiable virtue!

I was there just last weekend, i stayed at hotel blyss and thought it was very good vfm, included free wi-fi too for any ph withdrawals! That said though i dont think it would be what you would consider close to the attractions so may be no help sorry.

Only thing i would say is get a tram pass for the duration of your stay, they go absolutely everywhere and very regularly, huge help!

Gorgeous place, enjoy yourselves thumbup

This site is mainly to do with night time activities but there is information of accommodation as well: just use the search feature.

At IBC in September I used the Chic and Basic which was fine if you're looking for somewhere clean and cheap. Doesn't do evening meals or anything like that but it's in the city centre so that hardly matters.

Failing that the Ibis over the station is OK but completely characterless.

The OP is looking for cheap & cheerful. That place starts at around €160 per night, so not in the ball park.

It's certainly very useful.

When visiting IBC I've stayed at the Rho & the Terminus (now called the Tulip Inn Amsterdam Centre) but neither of them are budget dorm type places. The Bulldog & the Winston are often mentioned for that type of accommodation but I have no experience of them. They are unlikely to be quiet though (true of most hotels in the RLD), although that may not be a problem for you. Tripadvisor is of some use, but the types of places you're looking at are never going to get five star reviews.

There's another site which has some very useful maps: Map 1 shows the position of every hotel in the target area of interest. Map 2 shows other things which may be of interest. Or not. No judging here.

We've booked flights, 6am flight to Amsterdam on the Saturday morning and a return at 11:30am on the Sunday morning.

We're considering not booking accommodation and boozing the night through.

This could get messy.

Me and my girlfriend went to Amsterdam the other week and had a fantastic time.
We booked through easy to book.comand stayed in a 2* hotel called the hotel Asterisk (close to Heineken Brewery) which was all we wanted. It was clean and friendly. Cost us about £60 a night including continental breakfast.
It wasnt smack bang in the centre but a short tram ride away from the centre but the trams are that frequent it wasnt an issue.

next time, check last-minute.com for their mystery hotel. find something unique in the description and google it - its usually lifted direct from the hotel website so you can easily find out what it is.

I got a king size at the 4* movenpick (great view) for £60 last time I went over, could have got 5* for not much more.

for a hostel, I'd recommend stayokay zeeburg. not amazingly central but leagues ahead of anywhere else.

for a one night lads trip, I wouldn't bother sleeping

Highly recommend these guys for accomandation, http://www.the-monk.nl/index.html they have a house that sleeps up to 8 people, right next door to the Red Light district and overlooking a nice square with plenty of places to eat.

Turn left for naughty and right for normal.
