Evening all,

OH and I have booked off the last week in March off and are planning a little trip to mainland europe. Obviously I couldn't pass up going to the ring, so we're looking it staying there for a couple of days, then we would still have 3 or 4 days left to stop off somewhere else.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a nice area to stop off on the journey back, or somewhere not too far off the track?

The obvious one looking at a map would be Brussels, but I'm not sure what its like to visit?

Many thanks.

The first thing you should do when you get to Nurburg is take her up the castle hehe

Not a fan of Brussels personally. Koblenz old town is quite nice, not far from the 'ring. Boppard too.

Bruges & Ypres are worth visiting

Mosel valley, just south of Nurburgring. towns such as Cochem and Trier are very nice plus lots of smaller villages along the river Mosel. It's a big wine area also.

We went to Boppard a couple of years ago, its nice there and quite a good base to explore other bits of the Rhine from. Very nice local wine (Reisling) as well which we haven't been able to find over here unfortunately. If you have a nice car (we didn't, it was a rental turbo diesel astra) then I would imagine you could have some fun on some of the roads that go up and down into the valleys driving

Edit: We stayed in this ( http://www.hotel-rheinlust.de/englisch/index.html ) hotel, it was fine for us (2 adults, 2 children) and had a very good breakfast that also provided us with enough food for lunch times wink The only downside was that it had a very small car park so you had to park in one of the numerous public car parks. They also didn't speak much English, luckily my wife speaks enough German that it didn't really matter.

Another vote for Brugge here. Been there twice and loved it both times. Nice sights, great food and 2 pubs with over 500 beers between them! Oh and some shops for the SWMBO too.

How about a detour south through France - Epernay region (champagne country) would be doable and would leave you a 'short day' journey back to the UK afterwards. Beaune (Burgundy country) isn't that much further south - did Beaune to Calais in ~6hrs inc stops last year.

Go south to Italian lakes, eg Lago Maggorie (Hotel Grand Dino, Baveno) a couple of nights back over alps to Switzerland and do an overnight in Rheims on away back.
