Eurotunnel with a flexi ticket.

Cant be beaten in my experience.
Eurotunnel for sure, don't think I'd bother spending more on the flexi ticket. We've turned up 4 hours early and they let us on.

Whereabouts in the UK are you & where do you need to get to in France could have a big impact on the quickest route.

Because if you live in Cornwall & need to get to St-Nazaire then the eurotunnel won't be the best option.

I'm in Midlands.

I have a member of staff out there that I might need to bring back in a relative hurry tonight!
There is a Portsmouth <> Caen ferry (well, Ouistreham [sp?]) - however, it's a 6-8 hour crossing (depending on whether you go during the day or overnight).

However, it does give you a nice rest, and you don't need to go from Calais to Caen. ETA: BUT (and it is a big but) it is expensive.

(I use this myself to visit my brother - but that's because he's relatively close to Caen, and I'm relatively close to Portsmouth).

Pity its not in a few weeks because I don't think the high speed ferries are running yet - otherwise you can be in Caen (or Cherbourg) in 3 hours from Portsmouth

Caen is over 200 miles from Calais (so 3-4 hours drive each way realistically). Still might be worth looking into a Ferry direct to Caen. Try Brittany Ferries or LD Lines.

you'll have to be thinking of leaving about now, straight to tunnel and 3ish hour drive to Caen

How long has that been a high speed route? I never knew about that, OT but it would be dead handy for Le Mans.

I'd forgotten about that high speed route - however, it's not all year round FWICR, and I think once a day.

Love the idea of a trebuchet powerful enought to fling someone the 21 miles across the channel

It would still be quicker to drive to Folkestone and down from Calais to Caen. However its a lot of driving. The overnight ferry means you can have some beer and arrive refreshed in the morning.

If they do that on the next series of top gear, you thought of it first ...

Bus/Train to Paris, fly to East Midlands with bmibaby, pick him up from there.

Got to be easier than driving there and back?

or charter a plane from St Gatien (DOL) airport

Don't know how long they've been doing it but Brittany Ferries is the operator.

3 hours on the "Wargle-cat" when its rough might be a bit challenging though! hehehurlhurl
