For a summer road trip I'm looking at getting to Dover the evening before we catch the ferry to get an early start. Any suggestions of somewhere cheap, relatively close and that will be OK with a late check in and early departure in the morning?

Cheers

The Premier Inn on Marine Parade is about the closest to the docks (if you don't mind the traffic outside on the dual carriageway).

Ashford and surrounding villages. Not far from Dover and you'll find somewhere nice.

Living in Dover frown i can say that the best place is either marine court down near the docks or if your traveling via the A2 the ramada hotel in Whitfield is good and is only a 10 minute drive from the port.

I've used the other Premier Inn a couple of times, about a mile out up the hill, nice and quiet. Brewers Fayre (pretty good actually) and a petrol station on site and a quick coast down the hill to the docks in the morning.

We travel down from Scotland sometimes, and stay in a Holiday Inn express just up the A2 IIRC, its next to a petrol station, and about 10-15 mns form the port. Your breakfast is included, and its a lot quieter than right next to the port i think.

Last time I did it, we stayed in the Travelodge at Ashford which was then a very short drive to Dover. Seen the premier inn one on the way back and would probably use that next time.

Why would you want to be next to a petrol station? Surely nobody fills up before they get on teh ferry/tunnel? It's significantly cheaper in France. Last time I was there (about 2 months ago) Diesel was €1.30 per litre which is about £1.08 per litre as opposed to £1.38 a litre in the UK, nearly 30% less.

Didnt buy fuel there, just mentioned it as it was nearby, might've helped in locating it.

fill up the tank in France, and with the money you will save on fuel..stay at Wallets Court or the Hotel in St Margarets at Cliffe, the name of which escapes me at the moment..but both are very good
