I'm looking at flights from Seoul to London in August and Aeroflot seem to be the cheapest by a country mile.

I remember we used to joke about them a little when I worked as a travel agent, but I've personally never flown with them and was wondering if anyone has and what your opinions are first-hand?

Are they really that bad? smile

yes ! Ive flown with them and they really are that bad on the other hand UTAIR ( Russian Siberian airline ) has been excellent although they dont fly the Seoul- London route

There is a reason why they are cheap , I just didn't have confidence in the maintenance after the plane we were on had to make an emergency landing following fuel problems .....
check the type of aircraft thats scheduled if its a Tupolev 154 stay well clear

They are an awful lot better than they used to be, but, that isn't saying much!

Only kidding - they have improved beyond all recognition versus the Aeroflot most people would picture. They're part of Sky Team, have mainly new Airbus and Boeing planes (still a few Tupolevs etc around though, but mostly used internally) on international routes, and have been quickly catching up with the rest of the airlines in terms of infrastructure, service, etc.

I guess at the end of the day you pays your money and you takes your choice - there's a reason why they're so cheap. I've only ever used them to/from and internally within Russia, so couldn't comment on their other international services, but my most recent experiences have been fine.....

....certainly far better than my experiences from the early/mid-nineties eek

I vividly recall the time in the early 80s when I was flying out of Dushanbe airport on a mid sized twin prop that had definitely seen better days with about 25 passengers on board. As we accelerating down the runway about to take off the forward door suddenly flew openyikes Needless to say take off was aborted and the door secured. Things are much better now and the seatbelts worklaugh

Yep, flew LHR to Mos with them and had a good flight. Modern aircraft etc. Bit lighter on the safety demos than what I'm use to, but apart from that no issues.

My contact in Russia however retold various tales such as cockpit with the captains Alsatian tied up, people sitting in the toilet for take off as there weren't enough seats to go around etc

Flew into Lithunia with them in the late 90s. It was, as I would imagine a carrier landing to be. The pilot seemed to get to about 50m and then switch the engines of so we fell out of the sky - well that's what it felt like. This was onto a very icy runway I might add.

I´m an aeroflot silver card holder so have some experience (mainly BCN to SVO)
I think all their international planes are now not the old Tupo´s which I would not want to go on. I was told that they have a very young fleet which I can believe having flown with them a lot in the last year.
Lounges are not great, but the service on the plane is quite good. Meals never change and business is much better than economy, but thats still servicable. I prefer them to most other airlines (Gold on BA and silver on Lufthansa) so I have some others to compare.
I would go for it as they also have a good safety record outside of Russia
