Does anyone have an idea for a good stopover point (3 or 4 nights) between London and San francisco?

On a serious note - Montreal is supposed to be good isn't it?

Chicago, Seattle, Austin, Las Vegas

Never been to the US so I would try and get to another city out there.

Depends on the airlines as to where your connecting flight will be. One of Delta's main hubs is Atlanta, stopped of there on the way to SF last year. Breaks up the flight nicely but don't think it's exactly a place you'd want to spend anytime in like New York etc.

I hear Des Moines is nice.... wink

Otherwise - probably do somewhere on the east coast. DC is a big United hub (as is SFO) so could do that? Otherwise Chicago? Dallas? Atlanta? NY? Boston? Or spend more time in CA.

Reykjavik would be good, but it's a very expensive stop and too cold for a few days (I won't have the appropriate clothing!). My thoughts so far are Chicago (cheap), Calgary (Banff) or Montreal.

It really isn't that cold and it's not as expensive as everyone would have you believe. We thought the prices were about on a par with London and it really bit us hard. Calgary and Montreal aren't going to be much warmer you know...

What I meant was that it's very expensive to add it as a stopover when compared to places in north America.

It won't be any colder than Banff or Montreal I would think, due to the benefits of being next to the sea and full of volcanoes. As for price, it's expensive if you look at the main airlines, but I believe Icelandair will be quite reasonable.

I was in the States last week and there were loads of ads for Icelandair pushing the Iceland stopover. Maybe they are doing deals.
