Tenerife - Playa de las Americas
Discussion
ok guys, trying to organise a holiday for me and a few mates. looking for somewhere thats hot, cheap, beaches nearby and good nightlife
from what i gather Playa de las Americas fits the bill perfectly and we can get flights, accom and tranfers from around £190 off travel republic. we are going for 4 nights mid june
i have done ibiza and loved it, but thats far too expensive. considered the likes of malia, rhodes etc but im always wary of these islands that seem to pop up each year as being the place to be for nightlife plus they seem to attract guys with 2 things on there mind- f
k or fight.
considered malta but reading into it the average age of drinkers in st julians is about 17 and rarely goes above 20! we are 25-26 so somewhere where we wont feel old is preffered
im hoping Playa de las Americas is what we are after and just wanted peoples opinions on the place who have been, only other places i can think of would be somewhere like marbella, malaga etc

There's a dedicated 'strip' for clubs called the Veronica's complex, lots of bars and clubs all vying for trade, lots of PRs trying to drag you into the bars with offers of 2 for 1 etc. It's all concentrated into one area so the decent tourists don't get too much hassle. I have not been for a few years but last time it was busy but not buzzing and not too many idiots. This was in January though, I only ever go there for some winter sun.

The local authorities have tried very hard to take Play de las Americas up market over the past decade, many hotels are now 5 star, lots of older, more wealthy Europeans etc. They have tried to move away from encouraging hordes of young party people.

Veronica's is very run down these days, definitely past it's best. Playa is very glitzy and noisy, it's my personal idea of hell but if you're nineteen it's probably awesome.
One alternative is to stay at the bottom end of Los Christianos and walk into Playa for the nightlife. They kinda run into each other these days.

All of the places you have listed are much of muchness really.
I went to Playa de Las Americas in 2001 when I was 20. As a 20 year old it was awesome, as basically all I wanted was alcohol and sun and it had both in abundance.
Looking back it was a bit of hole, but perfect for a lads holiday.
No idea what it's like 10 years on though.

thanks for the input guys
we are just a bunch of average 25 year old guys, easily pleased and will walk away from trouble. we arent that fussed by abit of grot as most people going went to uni and were always on a cheap budget and generally lived like tramps! generally i find a good night out is made by the company
We just want a break, and a good get together as we start to settle down with houses, kids etc i have a feeling the only other chances like this will soon be stag dos.
normally we do city breaks, which is great but would like somewhere with a 'holiday' vibe
as i said ive done ibiza and loved it, but it was just too pricey. i understand its probably the nicest of the party islands in europe but is tenerife really that much worse??

St Julian's is great, sounds to me like you'd really enjoy it! We stayed there a couple of years ago - the party crowd did seem quite young but the island really has got something for everyone - loads of nice restaurants in the district too - it would make for a good 'grown up' lads holiday!Went to Las Americas in 2000 - it was a tired looking s
thole then (but I was 23 and just wanted a cheap drinking holiday - it fitted the bill but mainly simply because we didn't know any better!)... can't imagine it's improved much since!I also love Ibiza - aiming for my 6th trip this year but yes, it is stupidly expensive!

just 2 things concern me about the place. it would be full of 15 year old kids(malta is flooded with young students learning english) and there wouldnt be enough bars and clubs for 4 nights.
would did malta compare to las americas in terms of number of bars, clubs and the quality of the bars and clubs? also price aswell

I wouldn't want to claim much knowledge about the St Julian's 'strip', as I was actually on a quiet holiday with my missus (who'd just started the job from hell and needed a quiet break) and parents - but being nuts about clubbing and on the prowl for some future DJ opportunities for me and a few mates I went for a 'reckie' through the club district....just 2 things concern me about the place. it would be full of 15 year old kids(malta is flooded with young students learning english) and there wouldnt be enough bars and clubs for 4 nights.

The clientèle were quite young (yeah, a few 'kids') but not horribly so as an average(I was 32 at the time and didn't feel too ancient!)... People seemed well behaved (didn't notice any p'ssed up chav types)... Lots of (legal!
) eye candy too!!- Number of bars: Probably not as many as Veronicas, but enough to keep entertained for 4 nights - there's normally some good beach and boat parties happening too, so plenty going down!
- Quality: Infinitely superior to what I remember of Tenerife - bars all new and very clean looking, compared to Veronica's plethora of 'watering sheds'... Clubs had decent line ups (the likes of Roger Sanchez, Above & Beyond were playing that week IIRC - door tariffs were around 15-20 Euros for those nights I think, which isn't bad for such quality!)
- Prices... I didn't get to check the prices (other than the above) as I only did a reckie... Malta in general's pretty reasonable though - around UK prices for food in the tourist areas, and their local lager (Cisk) is very pleasant and cheap as chips!
