As the title really - never been before but fancy a change from the usual Med destinations. Will be travelling in May and found very reasonable flights and self catering appartment near Split.

Any recommendations or avoids?

I'd recommend a ferry out to Hvar Island and to stay in the main town there for a while. Beautiful place.
We hired a car and drove from Split to Dubrovnik along the coast road. Plenty of nice twisty bits right along the sea and some nice towns for a meal along the way.

A beautiful country, as advised get out to some of the islands by ferry, Split is a nice town and not too spoilt, you get a good mix of nationalities there.

If you like the sea then it is the clearest, cleanest I have ever seen. Croatia does lack beaches though, it has a very rocky coast line.

Definately worth travelling down to Dubrovnik. Fantastic walled city and very friendly, proud people.

Just to add that on the drive from Split to Dubrovnik, I'd recommend nipping inland into a little of Bosnia. Mostar is a very interesting place and if you leave Split early in the day, you'll have plenty of time to do this, see some places on the Croatian coast and be in Dubrovnik for dinner at a great Italian restaurant in the walled city.

Yep, beautiful place, nice friendly people, good food and stunning views.

If you need somewhere to stay try the Neptun / Importanne, the owner is a friend of mine after having been there twice, it is a cracking hotel with some of the finest staff I've encountered in any hotel anywhere in the world.
