Nottingham to Edinburgh - which route
Discussion
TBH @ 16mpg and presumably with a reasonable sized van on the back anything other than up the East Coast A1 is probably a non starter. At least even if the bit of the A1 after Morpeth drags and seems to take for ever iirc it's reasonably flat, all the other ways are hilly and at least an extra 2/3 gallons worth of gas.
Depends where you are in Nottingham tbh but I wouldn't exclude heading up the A614 and joining the A1 up by Clumber.

Memories. I was at University in St Andrews in the late seventies and lived in West Bridgford - and I must have driven this route about 20 times.
If I was visiting Newcastle it was A614, A1, A696 and A68.
If avoiding Newcastle it was A614, A1, A68.
Never driven the A1 route all the way for some reason.
Heard rumours that the A68 is now disfigured with speed cameras, and it's a bit hilly. Still, thanks for the memories - when 5 star fuel was 75p a gallon.
