I'm thinking about having a weeks holiday with a mate or two in a German city. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a good one to visit? It needs to have lots to see and do. Not too bothered about night-life. As a week is fairly long for a city break, what about staying somewhere that has lots of places a short train ride away? I don't really like the idea of driving over there.

I suppose Berlin is the obvious place?

Cheers,
Alex

Berlin is awesome. Especially if you enjoy cultural activities.

Cologne is pretty good too and has good transport links to other large towns and the wine regions to the south and west and the mountainous region to the east.

Munich is good, but too small to occupy you for a week. IMHO, naturally.

Thanks for that. I've had a look on expedia and Berlin looks to be quite a bit cheaper than Cologne or Munich.

Does it matter if the hotel is on the East or West side of Berlin? I was hoping to be as central as possible with good transport links.

Is there actually much to see in Berlin itself? I thought that most of it got flattened during the war.

Public transport is awesome and consistent across the whole city. And you're right about the cost of staying being lower than in the old cities in the west.

There is so much to see; I couldn't even begin to make a list. The web is your friend.
