Guys,

Me and a few mates are going to Thailand in July for two weeks. The first two nights will be spent in Bangkok and the days ten-fourteen will be in Koi Samui (if that's how you spell it). Have you got any suggestions in what to see/visit in these two places? And any ideas on where to spend the rest of the time?

Many Thanks,

Jw Vw

May be ok on the islands to the east.

I'd definitely expect at least some rain - although I went to Koh Samui in Sept 2009 and it wasn't too bad.

When I went in 2009 I did Chiang Mai (highlight was mountain biking in the hills there, awesome stuff) -> Koh Samui (fishing, chilling out, watching monkey knife fighting, going to the Muay Thai - Chaweng beach is bloody commercialised though)-> Bangkok (MBK to buy crap, Cheap Charlies, getting the fk out).

I like Thailand but aren't in a hurry to go back. Was pretty sickened by the sex trade stuff (and this is coming from someone who's not exactly a prude). Loads of young Thai girls going around with old Western guys.

In BKK, the regular tourist trail bits include:-
Royal Palace
Wats
Floating Market
Jim Thompsons House
Drinks at Labua State Tower

However, if you fancy scratching the surface a little and doing some of the stuff that doesn't appear in the Kuoni or Page and Moy tour list, consider:-
Lumpinin Park early morning
Pak Khlong Talat - huge fruit/veg/flower market, incredible array on sale
Chatuchak Market - everything in the world is offered for sale it seems
BTS - just buy a day pass, get on and ride about, jump off when you see something interesting
Muay Thai boxing - go to a real boxing night at Lumpini Stadium or Ratchadamnoen Stadium
Longtail charter around the klongs
Drinks at Hollywoods

In Samui, providing the current situation is fully recovered by then, you may well get VERY wet, you may get no rain at all??
The weather this year is absolutely all over the place.

However, what to see and do....
Party in Chaweng and Lamai.
Chill on the north shore, Bophut, Fishermans Village etc.
If you fancy a swanky (read pretentious) night out, try Nikki Beach. Less so at beach Republic.
Wednesday night at the Ark Bar on Chaweng is pretty busy.

Limited stuff to see on Samui, but you would be best advised to rent a car for a couple of days and just drive about. There is lots of everyday life stuff going on thats interesting, but not exactly touristy. See the catch coming in at Nathon, the market at Nathon, boat trips off to Koh Tao, Koh Phangyang, etc
There are the standard things too:- go karts, shooting, bungee etc.

Mostly though, Samui will probably be about boozing and lazing!!

In terms of other places, Ayutthya is worth it. The north has interesting adventures to offer in terms of trekking etc. Other beach areas to consider are Koa Lak, Krabi and Koh Kood for the more traditional Thai island.
If you get down to Trat (for Koh Kood/Chang) you are close enough to Cambodia to factor in Angkor Wat and even Vietnam for HCM.

Flighst in and out of Samui and Trat can be expensive though, as Bangkok Airways own the airports and make fees quite high for the other airlines.
