A few mates and our respective better halves are going camping within the next couple of months. We're meeting up shortly to discuss (amongst other things) venues. The only thing we've agreed on so far is that there needs to be toilet/shower facilities on site. There will be no kids with us, and I think somewhere that doesn't appeal to families or is quiet enough that they aren't noticeable would be a bonus.

Beyond that we're open to ideas. Personally I'd like somewhere that either has the option the park next to the tent (so we have power) or be a good few hundred metres from everyone else (partly for P&Q, partly so that if we're awake past midnight we're not disturbing anyone) so I'd love to hear if anyones got any recommendations.

I would recommend rydal hall in Ambleside. It has everything you need with a few good walks leading directly from the campsite. The best bit has to be its own waterfall that you can swim in smile

Used to camp here years ago.

It was pretty basic then, looks like it has all the facilities now and in a fantastic setting. Old Dungeon Ghyll is within walking distance.

Just a taster, camppsite in distance, ODG behind you.

^^^ This. It can be a bit windswept if the weather turns though.

Thats true, remember having to abandon site one year due to an horrendous storm.

The only tent still standing was my Vango but as the other members of the group had decided to pack up and get a B&B in Amblesdie who was I to argue!

Funniest thing was seeing a huge frame tent flying past us as we drove out of the site literally 6' off the ground! You can imagine the occupants still in their sleeping bags lying their open to the elements like something out of Carry On Camping. smile

We camped here in the Peak district last year when we went to the TVR meet at Chatsworth.

Beautiful spot, quiet, electric hook up if wanted. Showers were a bit outdated were due to be upgraded.
Able to park the wedge next to the tent

Only down side was the unexpected frost at night and it was censored freezing!

Think I recognised a few places, pretty sure I stopped at the same spot on the Honister Pass (and went clambering up the opposite hillside to get some photo's.

The waterfall bit sounds appealing - though I'd hazard it was freezing? Was it much of an issue being so close to Ambleside (which seems to be the tourist capital of the Lake District)?

Nice to see some options other than just the Lakes (not that I have a problem with the Lakes - I love the area.)

The area does look stunning, I admit I'm tempted looking at that street view link.

Quick question - what's the Peak District like? I've been to The Lakes a few times and love it round there, but am currently looking at a site in the area linked below. Is there much to see and do round there?

It is lovely during the summer but after swimming in it during January i wouldn't recommend it as im sure my heart stopped. laugh It is not a problem being so close to ambleside because the campsite is off a track and away from everything, plus it has its added advantage of a walkway leaving through the fields to ambleside. So really unless you want to be a part of ambleside you don't have to even know it's there.
