South of France in May
Discussion
The lady and I were thinking of driving down to the South of France towards the end of next month, with a view to stopping off for a couple of nights on the way down, then have a few nights down around Nice, and head into Monaco.
So far nothing is booked, but I realised (coincidence of coincidences) that we're looking to be down there the same weekend as the Monaco F1 GP. What a shame...
Never having been down there before, I could use some suggestions of where to stay that's within commuting distance of Monaco, but far enough out to not be ridiculously expensive.
Oh, and might still have availability this late.
TIA

Well it depends on your budget and what sort of accommodation you want (hotel/B&B/camping)
The closer to the coast the more expensive it will be. On F1 weekend there will be long queues of traffic in all directions getting into Monaco (and out again) so you don't want to be too far west of Nice really. An early start into Monaco on race day is a must, or camp out from a week before on the hill to the palace if you want a free viewing area.

You will be hard pushed to find anything at a reasonable price from Antibes to Menton.
The traffic will be crazy.
Best would be to find somewhere around Nice and take the boat service to Monaco:

Train link was spretty good into Monaco when I went a few years ago. We flew into Nice hired a car and drove west through Cannes/Antibes/St tropez and camped at a small place called Agay. Fantastic spot and not expensive. For the last few days we camped between Nice & Monaco and caught the train into Monaco and spent a day there. Hassle free way to do it. No idea if its feasible on race day.
This is a view of Agay, its got a little bit more commercial since we went over 10 years ago.

Having been to the Monaco GP once, all I can say is, unless you are on a full VIP hospitality package with helicopter, hotel/boat and access to circuit - watch it on TV!
Try the Monaco classic Grand Prix which is held a week prior to the actual Grand Prix . Classic F1cars and has all the glitz without the big crowds
