Where to be during the Olympics?
Discussion
I know a lot of people are looking forward to all those athletic types coming here from all over the world but I seriously could not care less about a month of madness on the roads and people going on about it.
So I'm looking to get away from here for as long as possible, as cheaply as possible and as far away as possible.
So the plan is.... July 20th until August 15th 2012, 2 people, preferably warm(ish), not bothered about fancy accomodation, for a combined cost of about £3k (less if possible).
I've considered Australia, went there a few years ago and I'm thinking it's probably not going to be the cheapest option but at least I kind of speak the language.
USA looks like it will be just about as expensive.
Any tips around the possibility of going to somewhere in the Far East? Or anything else.
I'm pretty easy going, I just don't want to be here!

If you don't want to be around "people going on about it" then I'd avoid any major sporting nation (Australia, USA, Canada, China) and go somewhere less likely to have lots of athletes doing well.
How about this: look at the medal tables from Beijing and Athens and pick one of the countries near the bottom of the lists.

A lot of the Far East will be ridiculously hot and humid that time of year, but if you can bear it it will certainly fulfil the low-price factor and there is literally endless things to do and places to see. Oh, and anywhere remotely touristy in SE Asia - the language barrier will be no problem.
Ha, brilliant, I'll just go up to Scotland then
A camping road trip to Canada would be good but wonder how much camping the OH could handle with me.
I'd like to avoid Europe as I'm heading off on a Euro road trip in a few weeks on the motorbike so the plan is to start saving and organising as soon as I get back.
So are there any places in particular in SE Asia? I quite like the idea of Kuala Lumpur but don't want to stay there for 3 weeks.
Any tips for cheap accomodation over there would be great too.

Good plan Soovy, I'd do the same if I could!
This is what's making it so expensive for me at the moment LuS1fer, looking at a minimum of £600 each for flights anywhere around that time, surely everyone will be wanting to come here so there will be loads of empty flights going out... that was the original theory anyway!!
