Morning all,

Me and a few friends are doing a bit of a road trip later in the year, and we've realised that the end of it times in almost exactly with the start of Oktoberfest in Munich. So it would be rude to miss out.

The problem really is the price of hotels & hostels in the centre, and aside from camping there is no way of finding any sensible places to stay that isn't already booked out. So I'm investigating the idea of staying in one of the suburbs and getting the S-Bahn in, prices seem more reasonable (around 40-50 euros per person/night) and trains will take about 30 minutes.

Only trouble is I've never used a train in Germany, and have never been to Munich. So I'm asking the wise and travelled folk of Pistonheads if there's any part of Munich that's particularly worth staying a couple of nights in, or are there places to avoid?

Cheers

Hi, I live about 4km from the center on Leopoldstrasse.

I only know the north side of town, so cant help with the outskirts as such. If you can id try to make the distance as short as possible, as 30 mins is quite a long time when your busting for a pee after 4 or 5 stiens smile

Id try to stay anywhere on a Ubahn line or Sbahn. Most of them stop about 2am except the S1 and S8 which feed the airport, so these would be good if you are real party animals.

Oktoberfest stops about 10,30 most nights, so after that if you are still standing you can find other places to drink or head home. There are loads of extra trains, busses and trams running for those two weeks as well.

PM me and i can give you some more indepth help if needed

I did a similar road trip 2 years ago and we stayed in a pretty cheap hostel only 10 mins walk from the Oktoberfest site. Wasnt the fanciest places but it was just somwhere to get our heads down. Just checked and it has actually closed down now frown

Quite a few here though http://www.hostelbookers.com/results/loc/dd/dst/10...

Was in Munich a week or so before Octoberfest last year (alas we missed it because the missus' work wouldn't let her have any of the following week off! frown) but we stayed in Dachau and got the S-Bahn in and out.

Can't remember when the last train was now, but the price for the hotel was about £50/night rather than the many-hundreds that were in Munich. Stayed in a basic but tidy and nice enough Ikea styled private bed and breakfast type of place.

Used booking.com to look for places that were near to, but not in Munich (also had the car so some of the city centre hostel type places were no good for us)

Excellent, cheers for the feedback chaps. We've opted for the camping option about 20mins from the festival, as we'll have tents with us anyway and it's much cheaper.

Are we likely to need secure parking for the cars? They're nothing exciting, but are they any more likely to be damaged than other parts of the world?

Also, for those who have been before, I'm trying to book a table in one of the tents, is this going to be a fruitless task?

To book a table in the tents you need a group of more than 10 people. As it was just me and SWMBO we just wandered in and out of all the tents and funfair and then a group of German guys invited us onto there table and we had a dance and few beers with them.
Didnt even bother them that we didnt speak alot of German as we all spoke the language of beer!
Will add some pics later from the other laptop

We went last year as part of our Euro road trip. Iirc, our hotel wasn't that far out, only a few stops on the underground.

We din't book a table but you can sit outside and order beer from there.

The beer is superb. The atmosphere is superb. The fraulines are heiß! Really really good time. smile
