Hello,

Jut wondering if anyone heres been to Rio (im sure someone has...) as ive got an opportunity to go in July with my sports team but think their more interested in training/competing than the partying/sun worshipping id be looking to do.

Now as a solo traveller per se, and staying away from the Flavela's, would i get much trouble out there as my only sources of info is the negative press you see and the guys from my 'team' (who didnt really party but told me id love it)

Thanks

Never been myself but train with Brazilians and a lot of people who've spent time over there regularly.

The key seems to be hook up with a local as soon as possible to get the most out of your time.

I used to live in Rio and would say the best thing to do is to just stay aware of your surrounding. That and don't wear a watch.

Not been to Rio but have spent time in other parts of Brazil.

As mentioned above be aware of your surroundings, don't wear a watch (or any bling) and don't put your wallet in your back pocket.

Generally though the people are very friendly and boy do they know how to party!!

I had a great time there and would recommend it highly.

If you want locals to hook up with, go on www.couchsurfing.com and go in the Rio group. As soon as you arrive you'll be in contact with locals who know their stuff.

I was there the other year with 5 mates. It helped that we had a couple of Brazilian blokes look after us and spoke the language.

I'd go back in a flash. Had one of the best days in my life there when we saw the battle of the bands competition to choose the samba band for the carnival. Found some great bars down in Ipanema and we were taken around some proper local places by our local mates.

Generally everyone was very very friendly - especially the girls, who go nuts for blond hair and blue eyed blokes. Even old gits like me!

Didn't wear my good watch out. Didn't carry lots of cash. Had a money belt. Spread the cash around various pockets. Only 1 of our group had his pocket picked and only lost £20 worth of reals due to this tactic.
