Venice to Florence
Discussion
Not sure about between, but be aware that Fiesole (a couple of miles outside Florence, overlooking it) is a much nicer place to stay.
Also, you'll see the very best of Florence at 6am for an hour or two if you're lucky. As soon as things start opening, the tour groups arrive and it's manic.

+1 for avoiding Florence in the summer, it's absolutely rammed. And don't even think about San Giminiano.
Even last week when we were there, Siena was pretty busy also. If you are in that part of the world, and fancy a day trip out of Florence, I'd also recommend Lucca.
+1 for Lucca but drive cross country south from Maranello through Abetone. Even last week when we were there, Siena was pretty busy also. If you are in that part of the world, and fancy a day trip out of Florence, I'd also recommend Lucca.
It a very scenic drive and much more relaxing than the chicane of tunnels from Bologna to Florence taking the Autostrada route.
I would recommend you check out Treviso. It's not far from Venice and not out of your way.
