So we'd really like to go to Berlin, and I'm after a few tips!

First, the hotel we've seen is in Tiergarten, outside of the city. Is this really far out, or would it be fine? Is there anything near here?

We'd be planning to fly in to either airport, although the Tegel airport is nearer. Would it be awful going from the other airport? (It's cheaper)

Finally, what is worth seeing, and would 7 days be too long?

We're pretty set now. Looking to go at the end of this month, and going into the Schonefeld airport. From there pick up an ABC card as the airport has a U line we can catch and it's in the C band. Seems fairly simple! The bonus being that we get cheaper flights, too (Easyjet), and saves us £100.

Looking good! smile We'll be going for 7 days, so we have time to fully appreciate the city.

Well, due to flight times etc, we don't actually get 7 days in the end. We get an evening, 5 full days, and a morning. Hopefully that'll be enough to really get to see a lot of Berlin!

Really looking forward to it. We're flying EasyJet, which I'm not keen on, but it does save us £100 to spend on beer! I'm not sure how expensive it is out there, but it doesn't really matter as it's a city on my list of places to visit! (Even though technically I lived there, when I was a young child!)

I am officially excited!

If you look at a map of Berlin you'll see that the Tiergarten is really close to Mitte, which means centre, so you'll actually be right inside the city rather than on the outskirts.

There is tons to see and seven days will be fine, the U-Bahn and buses will whizz you everywhere that's worth going.

Have a wander around here for some ideas on where to go http://www.germany.travel/en/staedte___kultur/stae...

You'll have a great time.

I've just come back, beer was 5 euros.

If you choose to get the german travel card thingy, make sure you get it validated at the point on the platform (separate from the machine you buy it from). A few of our group didn't and assumed it was valid from the point of purchase.

They got a telling off from a ticket inspector who could've had them for a 50 euro fine each.

Ouch! 5 euros! Lucky I don't drink a lot I guess!

Planning on getting just the 7 day travelcard thing.

I know there's plenty of threads, but any personal recommendations of where to go, and what to see?

Cheers! Those are great threads. I was surprised to see Checkpoint Charlie mentioned as amazing, then mentioned as utter rubbish!

The Trabi Safari does look good though!

If you want attractions in Berlin I would have to say that one of the best things I've seen there was a friend of my girlfriend (she is German) named Sabine Marie Schmidt. She was German Playmate for December 2009 and I had to try my best not to stare whilst also in the presence of my girlfriend. Try googling her name for the playboy pictures (NSFW). wink

Check point Charlie is very dissapointing but there is still some of the wall nearby which is good. There are double cobblestones that show where the wall stood.

Thanks to everyone - very useful! We're off there in a few days, so now after any more from anyone else.

Particularly, some places to eat without breaking the bank would be good, but also after things to do! We've not planned anything yet, though have a few ideas.

Don't worry about Easyjet, they are fine (they're no Ryanair you know). And as you have seen the airport is well connected on the s-bahn.

From my trip, I can recommend a walking tour of Berlin to see all the cold war history. It was fascinating. And invaluable to have a knowledgeable guide. We also rented bikes one day to explore.

I'll be in Berlin by lunchtime tomorrow to start a week of r'n'r. Good and reasonably inexpensive and very pleasant atmosphere place to eat dinner is Cafe Oberwasser in Zionkirchstrasse.
