I've always loved the idea of going to Sri Lanka - has anyone got any experiences or recommendations?

Went 4 years ago and loved every minute. It's an amazing country, with loads to see and do. You'd probably need a fortnight there, the size of the place coupled with dodgy roads means it takes an age to get anywhere!

It's the kinda place that would win competitions based on points. It's doesn't have the biggest sights, or the most interesting history, or best beaches etc etc, but it is a solid 7/10 on all those. It's easier and less hectic than India, safari's can't compare to Africa, beaches are okay but not great for swimming due to the rough seas (west coast at least). Kind of easy mix of a variety of different experiences, easy to visit, friendly people, English speaking.

If you want a comfortable interesting holiday it's good, just don't expect safari to rival Africa, historic sights to rival India or Cambodia or history to rival Vietnam and you'll be fine.

Avoid the south or West coast resorts in summer, the monsoon is full on and makes it pretty unpleasant. The east is good though there will still be rain. I only ever go for the surf so tend to stick to the coasts but I have heard that the Northern mountains are fantastic.
