Damn good fighting force but rather short in the IQ stakes....

What really gets my goat, just seen again on the midday news, Oh Bummer and Camoron serving a BBQ to american chaps with more badges and medals than a long serving general.
They obviously get them for every visit to the PX or camp followers caravan.....
They are obviously NO reflection on their actual service as most of them seemed under 20!! But also no denigration of any real service implied.

My grandfather has the good conduct medal. You may laugh at the idea, but its not exactly easy to get. You do even 1 thing wrong in your career and you write off any chance of getting it. He also has 2 bronze stars but thats a different story...

It is not easy to have 3 years without "completed without any non-judicial punishments, disciplinary infractions, or court martial offenses"?

I know of 2 people who were given these, it is merely a medal for turning up to work.

i don't know how true it is of all the US forces, but i heard that in the US navy, when you are drafted to a ship, you automatically adopt the decorations that the ship has. hence all of the youngsters wearing shedloads of medals - decorational, not operational laugh

not sure how true that is though?

tick tocking - the practice of moving the arms on each side of the body, in the same direction as the SAME SIDE leg when marching. basically, when you walk, the opposite arm / leg swings in the same direction. tick tocking is the opposite, and quite hard to do, unless in basic training and on a drill square laugh

Long service and good conduct medal needs 15 years of undetected crime!!! Not just a visit to the PX without getting ketchup on your blues!!!

Good conduct Medal is for 3 years service without being reprimanded or court marshalled.

That is what we are discussing, why Americans have so many medals.

When your left arm and left leg move forwards together, right arm and right leg move together.

It SHOULD be impossible to do, but on parade squares all over the world every day, there are recruits making their platoon Sergeant apoplectic and their peers piss themselves with a display of ticktocking.
