Strange symbols found under carpet

In the process of redecorating our living room. Took the carpet up to find this painted on the floorboards!
it's about 8ft in diameter and shows the points of the compass (correctly orientated) and the suits from playing cards and what seems to be a coat of arms in the centre, facing east although this is quite worn.
Our neighbours have said that a previous owner of the house was into "weird stuff" and suggested it was of the occult. Whether this was paganism, satanism, tarot etc or even if that is hyped speculation we have no idea. Just wondering about the symbolism.
Any thoughts?

Go down into the cellar, late at night, alone, and using only a lit match for illumination. Make sure to leave the cellar door in a position suitable for blowing shut. When you find the secret trapdoor, or large chest, be sure to open it. If you are female, do all of this whilst wearing scanty garments. If you hear lots of screechy violin music, ignore it and press on.

And if you take a black guy down there with you, you can be sure you won't be the first to die.
The way that the shield points East is the most interesting part for me, it makes the design seem very awkward. The way the varnish has been worn away within the circle and seems concentrated on two areas facing each other is also interesting.
Aside from perhaps being used as an aide in fencing I can't think of what purpose if any it might have served and at this it's utter guesswork.

No variation of paganism I know of includes traditional suit symbols in its imagery.
And I say "traditional" as that kind of knocks Tarot on its head as well, what with having different suits itself (swords, cups etc).
A quick google/wiki implies that a bend on a coat of arms (a diagonal bar) indicates protection or defence, while the colour blue (or azure) denotes piety and sincerity. While the red (gules) usually denotes nobility and ferocity. Intriguing stuff. Masonic maybe?
