Local store miss pricing on purpose ?
Discussion
Last night went to my local corner shop (part of a chain but won't mention the name just yet) and select a bottle of wine and a couple of choccie bars, get to the till to pay by visa and for the third time now in the past 12 months the till rang up the bottle of wine at least a pound more than the shelf advertised price, i asked is that the right price and off walks the assistant who checks, apologises and corrects the amount.
Now i know its only a pound but i feel they are taking the p**s here and either they cant be bothered to put the special offers into their system at checkout or they are relying on people being too embarased to querry the price.
Not a skinflint, i dont rip people off and expect the same of others, what would you do, yes i can take my business elswhere but how many others are being overcharged ?

Yes, this should be in the Lounge, but fear not, it'll soon move.
This, in 99% of cases, isn't any of the things you mention - not in a chain, anyway. What happens is that prices are bumped up by 50p or a quid over time, and the staff must change the tickets on the shelf accordingly. Some get missed out, and as a result the price the till reads - the correct price - is more than the old price on the ticket that should have been replaced.
The correction counts as an erosion against the store, so it's in their interest to make sure all the tickets are up to date, but it's easy to miss some sometimes.

Interestingly, many European supermarkets have LCD price displays next to the products on their shelf. I always assumed this was so that prices displayed by items could be automatically linked to the prices charged at the checkout, and an update of one would result in an update of the other. How long before such a system makes it into a UK supermarket? (I'm sure they have been in European ones for 10 years or so.)

Just a mistake, although it is a little less forgivable in a smaller shop you will tend to get it more in chains than a "one man band" type as they constantly have offers and promotions changing. Be grateful they let you have it at the lower price because the price the till charged is more likely to be correct at the time of purchase. Now i know its only a pound but i feel they are taking the p**s here and either they cant be bothered to put the special offers into their system at checkout or they are relying on people being too embarased to querry the price.

That's interesting, I've never seen that on the continent. I'd give it at least ten years before such a system is implemented here, if at all! Strikes me as causing more potential problems than it solves. How long before such a system makes it into a UK supermarket? (I'm sure they have been in European ones for 10 years or so.)

I recently did a 'big shop' (I normally do smaller shops every other day) at a well known big branded supermarket. Several items were chosen over my every day ones, as they were on special offers, so could work out cheaper than the alternatives, only after the discount had been calculated. As it was a big shop, there were several offers involved.
Upon getting to the till, I was a good £7 out of pocket. Too embarrassed to call them up on it so left it. If this happens to everyone, they must make £££ of pounds a day out of it?

a few months ago bbc's Watchdog found asda to be doing something similar with the on-line deliveries, but it all turned out to be a harmless system error...

Morrisons are the worst shop in the world for this, stuff that is on offer often rings through normal price. I always check my receipt when leaving morrisons.
I've had quite a few problems there vanman said:

What's with all the people shopping in Morrisons?Hateful place.
To restart a old thread.
I have just been into the same shop i complained about originally, have not been in there for some time and having done some gardening this evening i deserved a cool beer to chill.
4 cans of Grolsch at £4.69, get to the till and give him a £10 note,
"that's £5.20 please"
"It says £4.69 on the shelf i tell him"
He dosen't even look up at me so i repeat it again and he simply says "i keep telling em what can i do"
No apology and this is clearly taking the P**S
This time i am going to report them to Trading Standards, i know it's only a few pence but if they have been doing this for years and people are to embarrased to mention it as i was previously then clearly they need sorting.
Can i name and shame them on here ?
