Pretty sure the scrap dealer in this instance reported the incident and told the rozzers?

Yup, it should be like the pawn shops in the US (maybe its the same in the UK too, I don't know) where if you take something in which is identified as stolen, you lose the item (and you've already paid out the cash).
Unfortunately due to the nature of the product it would be almost impossible to enforce.

No reputable scrap dealer in their right mind would touch something like that. Most I know would get it back and call the police on those attempting to weigh it in.

I think there will be a change to the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964 in the new year banning payments in cash which is the root of the problem with tracing stolen metal.

They should make war memorials out of papier-mâché or Plasticine.

Just scumbags, with no regard for anything! Float through life on the dole and the free goverment handouts and steal anything regardless of value or national sentiment. There is no honour among thieves it seems!

With Tidworth being one of UK's largest military garrisons it's a real shame the thieves weren't caught in the act. yikes

Unfortunately there's been a large rise in thefts of plaques from war memorials sold for scrap, sad thing is many of the names on them weren't recorded so are now lost forever.
