So I have a daughter (no pics wink )heading off to Reading this October. She wants to spend year 1 in halls of residence.

For anyone out there with recent experience of the university accommodation where would you recommend to try and get a place? (She has a confirmed place as she's currently on a gap year so should get first choice)

I've been out quite some time but the halls haven't really changed, only the town which is noteably smarter!!!

PM me with your questions, there are halls and areas to suit most requirements.

Been quite some time for me but I was in St Georges.

Main block was a bit tired but I believe that it has been done up. There were 2 other wings. One was self catering and in half decent nick in the late 90's so should have been smartened up by now, was mainly final year/mature students. The third wing was newly refurbished, en suite and network connections (a big thing back then) so was mainly inhabited by computer science people and disabled students.

It was however in a good location. The main road/high st was at the end of the road with bus stops etc and a reasonable pub (II{hazily}RC) Sports centre directly across the road and a path over the playing field to the main campus.

There was a car park but spots were fiercely contested. The JCR wasn't up to much back then though (Windsor and St Patricks were good back then)

Stenton and Mccombie halls are new, St. Patricks are the oldest and most basic.

Most of the halls are either being or have recentley been updated.

Aah! A wonderful eclectic mix of PH responses here. Nonetheless, something to digest and consider. Really interesting how the emphasis moved to where good nights out were to be had!

Keep them coming!

PS: even I have been to the Purple Turtle in town!

And Childs. Several have been bulldozed since I wa there in the early 90s when the Union was bust and the Purple Turtle hadn't become a trendy bar down by the Oracle.

A good night used to be to start at the Turks Head, move to the Turtle and then Sgt Yorke's casino for a free sandwich and to hand the rest of your money over to a minicab driver.

It's all quite glamorous nowadays. Wine bars on the river instead of winos in the river.
I love this one smile

Ah, Whiteknights for me, back in the mid-90's.

I was in the new (at the time) crescent block and had a disabled-friendly ensuite shower room. There was a seat in the shower so I used to stagger in from stes and fall asleep in the shower on the seat. Good for banging, too!

How could the law not know what's been going on down there for decades smile at a guess I would say its tolerated to a point as someone somewhere will take their place if it disappeared, better to have it all in one place and semi-"managed".
