Evening all.

Sold a set of alloys on eBay which were won by a chap fairly close to me. Communications have been fine and he's coming to pick them up tomorrow. However instead of paying cash which I assumed he'd do I've been sent the money by paypal.

Now the chap only has 8 feedback but they're all positive, however I was wondering if I should take some precautions in case he makes some kind of claim? I was thinking of getting him to sign something saying he has received them or even taking a photo of him leaving with the wheels. Or am I just being paranoid cos I read all the horror stories on here??

Reverse the PayPal transaction and ask him to pay by cash.

If he won't do this, I'd suspect he's going to scam you.

I wouldn't worry mate it's usually that he's sold a few things and has the money built up in his PayPal account.

I've done it a few times.

Easy way to justify purchasing new toys if you have sold old ones :-)

Look at it from his side, paying by paypal offers him some extra buyer protection, whereas paying by cash doesn't (AFAIK)...He's probably just trying to protect himself

I've never been keen on paying cash outside of ebay to settle a transaction personally, would rather paypal and collect the item.

He could have funds in Paypal that he wants/needs to use. I suggest you ask for proof of ID and address asnd get him to sign for the receipt of the wheels.

If you're still worried, just reverse the Paypal payment but that's a little unfair if you offered PayPal in the listing.

If he has funds on PayPal he can transfer them into his bank account free of charge, and frankly it's not your problem anyway.

Accepting money through PayPal can be problematic for sellings unless you have a proof of postage, which you won't have.

My advice would be to play it safe. Reverse the transaction and accept cash only. (this is what I do unless posting).

I would get him to sign a receipt, and also take a photo of him to negate any claims of "that's not my signature and it wasn't me that picked them up."

Why bother? It would still be paypals decision. Take cash, no problems.

The pain with paying by paypal are the fees that you get whacked with...Or does eBay still charge you a percentage of the final sale price however the buyer pays for it?

Reverse it.
If he wants them he'll pay cash. if not, you've saved yourself some bother.

I've done the same, buyer was perfectl fine with it.

I'd say you're worrying too much ... scammers are few & far between imho (small risk) + you must have his local address? If it turns sour just rock up at his house.

Here's a really really far out thought - perhaps he doesn't have the cash to hand and is buying using his credit card...

Sick of people with no common sense rattling this off on ebay...

You don't need any 'buyer protection' if you're coming to collect it anyway, do you. Don't like, don't buy.

Mandatory to offer Paypal in listings. Ebay owns Paypal, easy money for them.

Both charge seperately!

If so he could draw cash from the ATM for a similar fee to the PayPal fee.

Reverse the payment and ask for cash on collection.

Refund it and ask him to pay cash, far too easy for him to say that he didn't get the item and get the money back. The chance of a chargback might be slim but why bother risking it.

Playing Devils advocate, maybe HE is concerned that you are going to try to scam him by later claiming the alloys have been stolen, and has paid by Paypal to ensure there is a genuine trace of the funds going to you.

As you say his feedback is low so maybe he is being cautious.....

Nothing scammy about it imho. Paying byI paypal means he can use held funds, a credit card, put whatever else. If you sell on ebay, surely you expect to get paid by paypal? I've done similar many times.

I've done the same before as a seller and taken Paypal for someone who collected from me. I also Paypal'd £500 on an engine because I didn't have the cash (though this being PH I should probably say I didn't want to carry it around with me for such a meagre amount or something)

Not only that, but the paypal %age is applied to the whole transaction including the P&P charges!
On low value items on categories where e-bay dictate the P&P it is all too easy to end up making a loss!
