What????

A service was scheduled 3 weeks ago for my boiler, which we have a maintenance contract on.

So the engineer calls this morning to let me know he's on his way and asks if the boiler is running ok.

I explained that we have a fault, and that the radiators get warm when the hot water top is used.

I know this is a simple fault with the "diverter" valve.

So he says: "Oh, I can't service it if it has a fault, I'll have to call the office".

What the fk???

So now, I have to call another division of the same company, log a fault call, get an engineer out to come and fix it, and only then can it be serviced.

Well I fking never.

I get the boilers in my BTL's serviced every year, for that they are stripped down, cleaned (hoover the debris out), safety devices checked etc, gas tested and certified. Cost about £100 per boiler and takes a couple of hours in total.

The guy doing the service visits won't be qualified/allowed to fix other faults. He'll be on a tight schedule, and without the necessary parts.

The BG annual service consists of a quick look at the control panel then sticking a tester in the flue . Thats it. I call it the 'do you have a boiler' check as thats all they are really doing

So i am sure the service guy doesnt have any real knowledge about well anything really. So if there is a fault you will need to book again

If he's not qualified he shouldn't be touching it full stop. If he's servicing it he needs to be Gas Safe registered.

It must be said, that the last service took all of 25 minutes, and not an awful lot was done.

In fact, I felt that the thing was probably better left undisturbed.

But of course, to have the maint. contract, an annual service is required.

It's just another money making scam IMHO.

I was thinking of internal qualification rather than legal. I.e. he hasn't done the replacing part x in boiler y paperwork, therefore isn't allowed to touch it.

When our boiler broke down just before winter I called BG and did a deal that for £99 and then a contract at around £20 a month, they would have an engineer around the next day.

The engineer turns up and worked for around 4 hours replacing a lot of the boiler. He then returned a few days later with more parts to replace. A week or so later I had to call them out again as it was leaking and I thought I'd done well on taking out the maintenance contract. The boiler was fixed yet I received a letter from BG telling me that 'due to the lack of access' to the boiler they had terminated the contract.

The boiler is on the kitchen wall and not even covered by a fake cupboard.

Looks like after 3 visits within a month they got cold feet but the boiler has been fine for 2 years now and the massive repair only cost me the original £99.

If you had notified them of the fault when booking the service the guy/girl would have done both and been allocated the extra time slots in the daily schedule for 2 jobs and not one.

As another PHer once said, I also tell those infernal 'unexplained items in the bagging area' machines at Sainsburys that I have used my own bags, in fact I have used 20 of them. biggrin

^^^ This.

I did a lot of boiler servicing whilst training. We were allocated between 6-8 calls a day. No time at all to fix things. First question we asked the customer was "do you have any known problems with it" if yes we would ring HQ to book a different team to call then bugger off to the next one.

Oh and anybody that thinks these guys are not qualified to fix what they are servicing is talking total bks!

So what is the service supposed to achieve exactly?

Identifies sales opportunities, ohh, need a new boiler/powerflush/radiators. In return for a small kickback.

Not at all in my case. I was working with Connaught servicing Council and Housing association houses. Mandatory safety you know - The last thing they wanted was to have to replace a fire or a boiler!

Have you any idea what it takes to strip down and service something like a Baxi with a back boiler?
