Talking to a mate on a long journey putting the world to rights misquoted a phrase but it seemed to work...

"The early worm gets eaten by the bird"

PH masses must have a few more...

Throwing a spanner amongst the pigeons. It sounds a bit less harsh than putting a cat in the works!

Don't look at me in that tone of voice.

I like to use that quite often, purely for it's stupidity.

I used to work with a woman who regularly got her phrases muddled. Favourites included:

"I think we're barking along the right lines"

"I was listening out of the corner of my ear"

"I took the bit between my horns..."

"I think that raises more hares than it answers" (my personal favourite)

Never eat on an empty stomach.

(Used regularly by a colleague who never used to have his evening meal in a hotel when working away unless he'd had at least four pints in the bar first.)

I believe the full quote is; "Don't look at me in that tone of voice, it smells a funny colour".
