Duty Free Allowances
Discussion
So I'm out in Majorca again - weather great, decent cars spotted so far is a mind numbing none at all!!!
Anyway I price up the ciggies today & discover that the duty free allowance has been reduced from 3200 per person to a pathetic 800!!!
Why?
It appears that the rules were changed towards the end of last year although the changes were kept fairly quiet. So quiet in fact that in my holiday brochure printed in January 2012 the limit still shows as 3200.

ts in Brussels.
Makes my piss boil that yet again our laws are altered by faceless tosspots from some dull & boring foreign country.
Also would love to know which cretinous UK policitian agreed to this alteration. Yet another perk of living in a free society that has been taken away from us.

Ah, just chance it, you will be fine...
Best Wishes.

It is actually a piss boiler though, and I do not even smoke.
Not a chance. Went to Tenerife 3 years ago & we brought back 6400 not knowing that Tenerife was not in the EU so the limit was just 200 each.Best Wishes.

ds took the lot of us & refused to allow us to pay the duty at the airport.Stupid I know however I hadn't been to Tenerife before, didn't think to ask about the limit & we assumed that because their currency was the dreaded Euro they were in the EU.
How wrong was I? Cost me a fortune in lost cigarettes.

These are EU Directive EEC92/12 GUIDELINES, there are NO limits on bringing excise goods into the UK from another EU member state, if those imports are for PERSONAL use, personal use including gifts that are made free from cash or payment in kind. The guidelines will be used by UK CUSTOMS (Customs & Excise Act 1979) as a "point of evidence" in deciding if the importation of goods is either for personal or commercial import.

Although there are no limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco you can bring in from the EU, a Customs Officer is more likely to ask about the purposes for which you hold the goods if you bring large quantities of them. This will most likely be the case if you appear at the airport with more than:
800 cigarettes, or 400 cigarillos, or 200 cigars, or 1 kg of smoking tobacco
110 litres of beer
10 litres of spirits
90 litres of wine
20 litres of fortified wine e.g. port or sherry
800 is the duty PAID guideline not duty free, that's still 200 from non-EU countries.
If you bring through loads then there is a good chance you'll get stopped esp if they are in your case as they are often x-rayed now or there's a dog wandering around and they know who to pick up when the cases come through (if you saw the recent Sky series on Gatwick this was on a couple of times) with some rather lovely people threatening all sorts when they were caught.....

There is no limit for personal use provided duty was paid in an EU country.
It's purely to scare people into not bringing too much back as the revenue is losing millions and needs the money.
The HMRC website says:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/arriving/arrivingeu...
The first result from Google specifically talkimg about Majorca says:
http://www.santa-ponsa.com/duty_allowances.html
Which both confirm what has already been said.
As long as the duty is EU paid, and the goods are for personal consumption, there is no limit.
Only a recommendation.

ROO.
Thank you for that link which I have read - it is slightly contradictory though because on one line it says that the limit is 800 cigarettes & on another it says that there are no limits so long as they goods are for personal use.
Think I will play it safe, bring back 3200 & if i get stopped at Customs i will refer them to the pages you have uploaded for me!
Seems to be some confusion out here as well because the Tabacs also say there is no limit whilst the holiday reps are insistant that the limit is 800 so who do you believe?
