How is this for excessive packaging?

Postie rang the flat this morning with a parcel that supposedly is too big for our letterbox. Now, I have only ordered one thing online which I am waiting for, so surely there must be some mistake?
Sure enough, I meet him in the stairwell to be confronted with this:
What can be inside? Well, first layer off...
And inside the bubble wrap lies this:
Which of course, is exactly what I ordered. Except the last one came in a tiny cardboard package that went in the post box no bother at all!
It really begs the question, why? Nothing like over complicating something! This must have cost considerably more than a standard cardboard package, and if I wasn't in the flat at the time it would have been sent back and I would have had to go to the post office to collect it!
So, has anyone got any similar stories?

Couple of years ago I ordered the Lego Space Shuttle from the Lego website. As my order was over a certain value, it came with a free Lego magnet - a standard sized Lego man standing on a 'two-er'.
When a large (but suspiciously light) box arrived, I was excited - I thought my Space Shuttle had shipped early. Alas no, it was just my magnet:

Can't be bothered to upload the photo, but recently ordered some Denby tableware stuff online - 20 plates, 8 cups.
The boxes they arrived in were wrapped in 2 loads of thick black plastic, which was then wrapped in at least 900 miles of parcel tape, before being put in a black plastic bag and taped some more. Inside this box was another box which was then lined with sheets of cardboard, in which there was a single plate, in a plastic wrapper, wrapped in 4 layers of bubblewrap, then 10 square acres of packing foam sheets, as many air pillows as could fit, and any void space rammed with the foam wotsits.
I was really impressed at their dedication to ensuring goods arrived undamaged until I realised I had a [genuinely] 4ft x 6ft floor to ceiling mountain of packaging to dispose of.

I suppose it does mean the package gets delivered undamaged, but then my last Zippo turned up undamaged and didn't require this level of wrapping!
Best I ever had was a mini karabiner 3 pack (about an inch long) bought for 49p in a sale from sports direct with free P&P. It turned up in a box that was about 25% bigger than a shoebox and in it was a free pint-zized tea mug, heavy catalogue, and the thing I'd actually ordered. God knows how much postage they must have paid on it.
