I was coming out a pub the other evening and the usual bunch of cretins were giving it large to all and sundry and it got me thinking. If I got unwanted attention from them how would I fair? Not too well currently.

I am thinking of taking up some sort of self-defence discipline to not only give me the ability to handle dheads who've had too much to drink but also for fitness and generally something to do.

What is recommended as a good all round discipline?

Learn to fight like Daniel Craig era Bond. It's dirty, but effective...

Avoiding trouble or running away very quickly would be the best option.

By the time you start rolling around on the floor, it's all gone Pete Tong.
Trust me, it's not like Steven Segal films where 10 assailants surround you busting some moves whilst you deal with them one at a time as they take orderly turns to attack you.

Obviously this is much better advice. Avoiding confrontation is always the best policy smile Krav will keep you fit though...

This, quite easy to learn the basics as well and will keep you fit.

Best advice though is to run away.

Running away. No matter how big and hard you are, volume will always overcome stupid bravery and most "cretins" have no morals and will kick, punch and stamp all over your head and will not be tempered by upbringing, morals, alcohol or drugs.

I deal with prosecutions for violence and it is never worth it. Even single punches can fracture your face, eye orbit, lose you an eye or half your teeth. Leave the bravado to the films and just dial 999 at the first hint of trouble.

I once had a botle thrown at me by a bunch of teenagers and it bounced off the screen rail of my Corvette and missed me by a foot or so. I did what any red-blooded man would do and drove off, thereby saving me time and any possible injury. I would always choose to lose face rather than lose my face.

Like attract likes, i regularly encounter people giving it large when i go out and 99% of the time its only other people with the same "ive got something to prove mentality" that end up getting into bother. If some piss head is giving it large just ignore him and move on, its only when you can't control your own ego you feel you have to tell them to ps off that makes things escalate.

Let the idiots fight amongst themselves and enjoy your night.not worth getting into a fight with some piss head with a glass bottle in his hand or knife or something hidden in his pocket

If your regualry experiencing the same sort and its bothering you, go to a different pub with decent people.

Sound advice, but what happens when you can't extricate yourself? I would rather have had some training and not need to use it, over not having any and maybe needing it one day.

Also don't be fooled by the martial arts myth that you'll automatically be able to handle yourself just because you do martial arts and have a nice coloured belt.

Run like fk the other way (or just run faster than whoever you are with).

Learn to avoid trouble.

I agree with the masses - I'm seriously into Karate, and the fact is (and the way we are taught) is that if you have the option to walk away or avoid trouble its always the one to take.
Martial arts should always be seen as a discipline to avoid trouble - not get into it.

Having said that, it does give more confidence (and fitness!!), and the one time you do get into a scrape you can't get out of it may save you. Don't go thinking in a confrontational situation you'll get all Bruce Lee though - its hard to control the adrenaline/fear/shock when things do happen and usally your training goes out the window!

Boxing. Through growing up and witnessing/ avoiding/ splitting up/ being involved in, probably hundreds of fights from school yard scuffs to back alley brawls. The one thing that seems to stand out as a worthwhile ability is a knowledge of or ability in boxing. I've known guys with extensive martial arts training stand and take punches because for some reason they think you only use martial arts when "absolutely necessary". Fair enough, but you just took a beating.
You won't see a boxer doing this. There just always seems to be a quick reaction, almost instinct. And when your trained to punch, and trained to read the opponent, it's usually over very quickly. A boxer wont usually suffer from nerves. While a drunk fool is mouthing off and throwing his arms about, a boxer is watching there every move. And has probably already decided when and where and how hard to hit them. There's just simply no need for karate kicks or judo holds in 99% of fights. Just a well balanced punch at the right time.

I can't box, or fight by the way. Just years of observation.

I've done lots of martial arts, boxing etc... I'm pretty small and wimpy looking so during my teens felt I needed it and started with Judo, now I'm old I do Aikido twice a week.

If you're a sadistic fk and have no qualms about punching someone viciously in the face or throat you don't really need to learn anything, if you're not any sort of martial art or physically competitive sport will just give you an idea of how to use you physicality and probably give you some self confidence, but really martial arts work best for the other type of people who's ego and self belief out strips their ability, it's a discipline for the agressive not agression for the disciplined.

Unless you can really see yourself driving a thumb into someones eye socket best avoid the confrontation in first place though, because especially with drunks, without knock out power, that's what you're gonna need to do. There is no magic technique.

Any more than two blokes and it doesn't matter how hard you are, you're going to get your ass handed to you on a plate. Best advice: do some CV.
