I'm attending an appeal to try and get my youngest son into our local school, his brother already attends. He was refused a place on the grounds there is no room however we have no choice as it will be impossible for my wife to drop my eldest off at the first school then get a bus to the next school approx 5 miles away.

Has anyone gone though the same process and if so do you have any advice.

Thanks

ps I would post in the Lounge however i'm in the bin until the 20th Dec frown

My sister had a similar case with her youngest and he got in on appeal.

Hopefully they will listen to reason!

Similar thing happened to a friend, whilst the siblings were no longer at the school in question it would have meant a drive to the other side of town to get her to the school that she got into as opposed to a 5 minute walk, it got to the point of if she had to go to the offered school the mum may have had to give up work as she couldn't move her hours.

She got her daughter in on appeal so all was good.

Assuming it is your nearest school I think you've got a good chance of getting in on appeal.

we went through this,
sat down infront of a panel, made up of someone representing the school, and 3 independent persons
it was chaired by a retired teacher who was very pleasent and talked us through the process
the school then restates what was previously given in writing etc about being over subscribed etc

you can then put your case forward etc

the panel then express or add to your comments on your behalf for the schools representative to answer

the panel in our case was very good and it felt like they were on our side. one thing the panel made very clear was that they do not feel that a school that says it only has places for example 70 pupils in that year split into 2 classes is a final answer. they request info on if the school has ever previously exceeded these limits and on what grounds etc, as most schools have limits that in reality they can push a little, as they normally hold a place or 2 back for if pupils move into area a few months after the school term starts etc

dont be worried, clearly state your reasons and hopefully you will be fine

So you've now been banned from replying to your own thread hehe

eta if you really are unable to post here, feel free to PM me any posts you want to make. I'll only be online until about 4 today though, and probably not at all over the weekend. But the offer's there.

Best not mention you were refered from here.....

On the appears process. What is the school admission policy. They must have this in writing and will generally list out the priority in which the places are allocated. In most cases the first priority is to local authority care and registered disabled (normally around 10% of places) and the second is generally a sibling already at the school. This is unlikley to fill the remaining places then the distance as the crow flies is often used. If the school has not worked to this then the appeal should be a slam-dunk.

Keep the appeal to why your child should get in so as not to miss class time rather than how much of a pain it will be to drive across town.
