I should clarify that I'm not a kid that has watched some action films and think it would be cool to own one, I'm just interested in guns.

Anyway, with my 18th coming up I'm looking into applying for a firearms licence. If I did get it, I was looking at starting off with a pistol. What are the laws regarding owning a pistol in the UK?

Cheers

A) Wrong forum
B) You can not own a pistol legally under any circumstance.

Very simple. You get caught with one, you spend 5 years in the clink.

Easy.

If you are starting off thinking it is "cool to own one", you're probably off on the wrong footing! hehe

He didn't say he thinks it would be cool to own one

Surely everyone that applies for one is interested otherwise what would be the point of applying?

On a more serious note, do some research.

http://www.sportingshooter.co.uk/features/ask_the_...

Start there.

It is technically possible to own a pistol on a section 5 firearms certificate. Forget about that though, as you will never ever see one of those. Ever. In fact, I know of no one who knows ANYONE with a S5 licence, although I am sure a handful have been issued. Not to disappoint you too much, but even IF they did regularly issue S5 licences, they would never issue one to an 18 year old with no fire arms experience.

You will get pretty bored quick just looking at one, do you have any interest in shooting? Clay pigeon? Local farms? Shotgun licence easy enough to get but be prepared for visits from plod (and less desireables if you start running your mouth off about owning said guns)

Yup, I totally agree. Being interested in guns should be punished with immediate deportation for the safety of everyone else. Just listen to yourself.

I knew this provoke idiotic comments like this. I'm genuinely just fascinated in how they work.

Other than an air pistol, your chances are zero.
Handguns (pistols & revolvers) with certain exceptions incl muzzle loaders were banned in 1997.
You will need to be a member of a shooting club.
This link to the Met Police pretty much covers it:

Start by getting your shotgun certificate - much more simple to get a hold of than a firearms licence. Ammo is also easier to manage also.

Shotguns aren't overly dear to get started with.

Lots of clay clubs around - some will even store your gun so you don't need to worry about installing a cabinet initially.

Bloody hell - that sounds like a nearly helpful post!!

From http://content.met.police.uk/Site/firearmslicensin...

"Can I own a handgun?

Handguns are banned in England. This applies to any firearm with an overall length of less than 30 cm. However muzzle-loading handguns are permitted."

Now, why on earth do you want a gun?

I want a gun because I'm interested in how they work and I'm also interested in getting into shooting, e.g clay shooting.

Then join a club, no need to buy a gun. You don't go clay pigeon shooting with a pistol.
