Hello fellow Pistonheads and a Happy New Year to all.

I recently posted about making my own Christmas Tree and the ball has started rolling into getting them produced.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The response has been overwhelming and after spending all of Christmas speaking to Plywood suppliers, the FSC & PEFC, Screw manufacturers (must learn Chinese) and Packaging suppliers I am now in the process of getting three different sized 'Trees' produced for next season.

What I have found in my research is the amount of land that is cultivated for the production of real Trees and in all honesty it shocks me, we are not talking about a few Acres, we are talking about the great Land of Wales in area just so that we can hang some Bauble's and be merry.
I'm not here to change how we approach Christmas but I am here to make us look at how we use Tree's, or as I like to call them 'Oxygen makers'.
I am aware that I'm a carpenter and use my fair share of timber but my tree design uses the whole tree, from outer bark to the heart.

What I am asking is that on your travels with your trusted mobile camera phones in your hands that if you do spot an abandoned Christmas Tree that you could take a picture like the one below and post it on here.
I plan on using the pictures as a sort of marketing tool to sell my product. All photo credit will be given and the plan is to possibly get all named parties interested involved in the product.

Was following your thread last month. Loved the idea of your tree and it's good to see your putting it in to production.

This is a great idea. And has made me fee somewhat guilty about my tree and its demise. I will endeavour to photograph any I see.

Good luck in your venture.

Do local Tips accept trees or do you have to take them somewhere else? I imagine wherever they go will be inundated with them this weekend. Worth a visit methinks OP, although you've no doubt thought of that. smile

There are lots of places that run events recycling your tree.

Last year in a country park near me they ran this event where Leonberger dogs pulled sleds taking trees from people's cars to shredders in the park. Donations were welcome for 'Hounds for Heroes' and people were welcome to take a bag and take some chippings away for their own use.

Gretchen this is a lovely idea, it reminds me of my Christmases spent in a small German village, walking up to Midnight mass in the crunching snow, waiting to see what awaited me on St Nicholas day.

However I live in London and Time & Space is my priority. I want to bring Christmas back.

I have thought and been in touch with my 'Dump', it's called land fill, I did hope that they would say that all tree's went to a big chopper and then sent to cold countries for fire wood but the answer is NO.

London borough councils have put up their pick up dates and also recycling locations for trees on their websites.

Maybe an idea to go to some of the areas near you on the dates they list for collection? There's sure to be piles of abandoned trees in the streets. And some good photos to be had from the drop off points.

Interesting, I knew they collected but was never sure what they do with the chippings.
This is a guess, but I have a feeling it doesn't go into British Timber.
Genuinely interested in finding out. I hope it's good but have my doubts.

Do it and get your mate to take a pic of his. The sadder and forlorn it looks the better.

I spotted this whilst working today. I just took a quick snap as my customer probably wondered wtf I was doing.

It was hard to get an artistic shot using an iphone in the middle of a car park.

Thanks, I do have a friend who works with glass and he's looking into the possiblities of creating a one of for me.
I'm a Wood man by trade so it has to be wood, the CNC firm I'm using is going to run one sheet of acrylic through the machine at the end of my production run. I need the router cutter as sharp as possible and at the expense I laid out I'd rather it was done at the end.

Sorry. Slightly unrelated to the current topic, but still... you haven't thought about using reclaimed wood? Could make a further selling point(s): more environmentally friendly, truly individual etc.
