Sometimes people post stuff without thinking (apologies for the times I have done so). Some people post stuff with good intentions (me, always) and it gets misunderstood. Some people post good stuff (once in a while that *might* include me). But what I notice is how aggressive the replies are, and how easy it is to get carried away or insulted by other people's opinion. Seems a shame. Most on PH are quite similar, yet we still fight. Why is this?

One person likes to disagree with the OP and then everyone else jumps on the bandwagon because it looks cool. I rarely start threads as all too often they turn into OP bashing for no good reason.

The irony of your user name biggrin

But OP yes it seems to happen more than it used to. There seem to be many whom simply want to disagree, no matter what the OP.

Big problem I see is people almost pathologically unable to grasp that someone else might have a different viewpoint to them. The "Audi Bashing" thread was a good example, the amount of people that just could not grasp that some people might just like them. "What about the steering feel" some were whining, "what about when you're on the edge of adhesion?"

It was completely beyond them that many people couldn't give a fk about "steering feel" or "on the limit handling".

It's going on right now in the "Diesel Convertible" thread. "I've never driven a diesel convertible but non the less I'm here to tell you that anyone that owns one is an idiot!"

Basic stance for many seems to be "this is my view, I've not had any actual experience but anyone that disagrees with me is an idiot and/or just plain wrong".

Painful sometimes.

That. Notwithstanding our coming together re standard Top Gear comment on the Audi thread (at least, I think it was you), I'm in complete agreement.

It's just bizarre that people are unable to grasp that what they like isn't necessarily what other people like/feel is important/even registers...or if they do then, on balance of all those things, they come to a different conclusion/compromise.

Thank you. (And probably! biggrin )

The other thing is people barging in with their opinion based on the thread title without bothering to read what other people have said.

It's like some bore loudly crashing into a pub conversation with his opinion when it's already been discussed and debunked. Indeed that's not even a great example as at least the pub bore has the excuse of not being able to see other people's opinions.

Top Gear thread is a prime example. "The race is a fix, why didn't clarkson take the chunnel!!!" It's then explained why and three posts down someone else crashes in "The race is a fix, why didn't clarkson take the chunnel!!!"

I'm all for different opinions, its called a "Discussion" forum after all but its the arrogance of some posters that really gets me.

They think because they are a petrolhead so that means they can look down on people who have little or no interest in how a car handles or buys a diesel to do less than 10k a year.

The "Stupid Thing None Petrolheads Say" type thread for example.

My sister would go into this thread, she has no idea how a car works, what steering feel is, whether its FWD, RWD or powered by fairy dust.
She has a basic Corsa 1.2 that she uses to pootle to the shops, visit friends and relatives occasionally and thats it.
She's happy with it and thats the main thing.

I wouldn't dream of going on that thread and taking the piss because she didn't know a trvial fact about the car, how sad would that be?

Ok, feel better now thanks :-)

Some people just like the moral high ground of posting an insulting comment that has no relation to the thread.

For example, first reply here.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

They don't bother me since 95% of PH will give you good advice or reply, and I can deal with the trolls. hehe

The stupid things non-petrol heads say is a mostly good natured and somewhat geeky thread. I certainly don't think it's looking down on people.

The odd poster looks at it that way perhaps, but agree with you that in the most part it's more geeky than enything else.

"And he didn't even know what the firing order of an 86 Jag V12 is" and stuff like that. All a bit daft but pretty unoffensive.

The thing that amazes me is that people will argue about tastes too.... Oh X or Y is not funny etc. There is no right or wrong answer yet still they dispute it!

Exactly. How can you argue about whether something is attractive or not? Totally subjective and utterly ridiculous but it happens constantly.

As we seem to have acknowledged, the OP is quite right. It's fine for people to disagree with you and for them to say so, but in so many instances one or other party feels the need to retort with a pointlessly spiteful comment. The best thing to do under those circumstances is just to ignore the comment. Some people think that because they're on the interweb they can just be a cock, post things that they wouldn't say to your face and think that what they're doing is perfectly fine. Although I don't get offended (what's the point in being offended by a knob?) it does piss me off.

Regarding the Non-Petrolheads thread, I think that's fine because this a site for car enthusiasts/nerds and to us a lot of what they say is amusing. We don't expect non-PHers to see the thread but if they did they shouldn't find it hard to understand that it is just good-humoured, inoffensive nonsense for sad car weirdos.

What never ceases to amaze me about PH is the failure of many posters to grasp that shouty, angry posts are likely to be ignored by a lot of readers, and result in the author being treated with disdain in future.

Sadly, a lot of threads tend to go that way, in fact you can usually hazard a guess where a thread is going to go, once the usual suspects, whose 'specialist subject' has been touched upon, show up.

I find myself staying my hand from posting in some threads, purely because I know they'll end up being dragged shoutily off topic, and cluttering up 'My Stuff' for weeks.

The Lord of the Flies effect. *nods*

Frequently the worse offenders are people who have made no other contribution to the thread.

I experienced similar when I started a topic in SP&tL about vehicle searches. A 'well known' member who appears to be a serving officer made the first reply, was quite unpleasant and posted complete rubbish.

Considering that I had hoped for a helpful reply fromt this fellow, I was disappointed and I replied in-kind. Before the dust had settled the thread was full of silly little men making aggressivley deriding posts - it was comical.

I wouldnt bother again, and I found the answer by buying a copy of (Butterworths) Police Law.

Internets is serious business. My opinion waaaaay overrides yours even if you're an expert in your field and I've only read about the topic in an 8 year old magazine in the dentist's waiting room. FACT.
