Anybody on PH seriously into skateboarding?...

Seems to be a craze that comes and goes...the golden years were in 1976/7, when it seemed every kid in the country had one.

Was into skateboards circa the dates mentioned

if i went on one now i would break my ******** neck.

however, last year in our area the councils built loads of skate parks for the young uns

get used by skate boards, skates and bmx bikes.

Absolutely love the things to bits , I gave up when I was in my mid thirties, im now over fifty & can still be seen hoofing up the road every now and again.
Many years ago I was sponsored and travelled around quite a bit doing shows & comps but they stuff they do now blows me away.
Im still involved supplying timber for skateparks so my misspent youth paid off! I would love to spend a day rolling around in a big old pool & smashing the hell out of the coping again.

i think the current trend is those stunt scooters. The seem to ps off the skaters though as they see it as cheating/unskilled/unpracticed

I was a committed skater.

-For about 13 minutes.

Long enough to take that day's second-hand purchase of a "Turbo II" to the top of a hill, start off down said hill, discover terrifying speed wobble and hit the tarmac tits-first at about 34mph.

Went home, probably watched Grange Hill. And not 'Gleaming the cube'.

Once a skater always a skater., you will always look at the surrounding areas you walk about in and see ledges ,steps,flights of stairs ,,banks that can be used to skate on
I regularly do 'fingerboard' tricks when aim bored

I skated hardcore from 1984- 1991 , was completely my life , ignoring school etc ,skating all day till it got dark then watch skate videos till bed time,!

Oh those were the days 76/77. I was fearless back then! wouldn't go within 10 feet of one now, I'd break my fking neck lol! Once a skater always a Skater, you wish.

In the 70's and 80's my dad used to tour the country with skate ramps. The local council would pay to have them put up in local parks and he had a fleet of trucks that delivered them.
He used to fly off to the US and bring back all the latest gear so we used to have the best kit. Or at least my brother did because I kept falling off and breaking me and the best kit!

I skated regularly from 1989 until about five years ago. I used to be pretty good and was getting "flow" from a number of companies including Chocolate Skateboards, DVS, Matix, Globe & Hurley but not all at the same time. When things were staring to get going I went to Norway for a contest and shattered my right ankle and had to rethink my "career" options.

I am still friends with many of the guys I skated with and most of us still skate occasionally but nowhere near the level we skated at in our younger days. I am glad I got into skateboarding over football or rugby. It is so inclusive and a great way to meet people and travel. One of my skate friends from San Sebastian is visiting for a week this Saturday and no doubt we will end up at a skatepark for old times sake.

I was heavily into skateboarding in the late 80's-mid 90's, street skating and a bit of ramp. We used to get the train or coach to Oxford, Leicester, South Bank or skate drainage ditches and in multi storey carparks locally. You look at your surroundings in a different way. I still get a little moist upon seeing a nice handrail

I kept some of my old boards, and have kept my hand in a little. My sons think its most amusing if I pull one out of the shed and pop a kickflip on the garden patio.

Got a problem with skateboarders, gravel is you friend. Kitted out with a balaclava and camo, armed with bags of gravel, a shovel and a side sliding door on a transit war was declared . I covered a whole car park in the stuff once and got rid of them over night.

Was fun watching them the next day locking up and falling over, then finally giving up they found somewhere else to annoy people. They did try it every now and again though, unfortunately for them I kept a healthy store.

Yep we were mad for skateboarding in the late 70's too.

I still have my G&S Fibreflex Board with Gull Wing Trucks and Red Kryptonite wheels.

Sadly I can still ride it pretty well, as I demonstrated to Thomas recently when I bought him one for his 6th Birthday.

We use to read skateboard magazine, and dream of riding swimming pools like they all did in the us.

Sadly the most my board gets used now is for fitting and removing the engine on my Caterham!

Hi,

Loved skateboarding as a kid and after first seeing them on TV on programmes such as Starskey and Hutch etc we had to make our own, you could not yet buy them in England.

Made mine out of a piece of wood and a roller skate split into two and screwed onto the board, i recall with a marker pen drawing a Speedy Gonzales logo on the board and then varnishing over the top, the board was so wobbly and recall many accidents going down the big hill in our local park and getting the wobbles halfway down, still i could defy gravity on the way up by tic-tacing back up, wow such memories....

My son usually gets the bug again each year once the sun starts to shine, he has got through several boards already but i make sure he looks after the "Tony Alva" board with Bennet trucks i bought him a couple of years ago, bought from USA via ebay and got stung with import duty but it just glides along at speed compared to the current trend of boards with their noisy small hard wheels.

He does not know yet and must admit i am dying for a go myself but as i am 50 in a couple of months i am concerned that i will be the embarrassing dad.

Anybody want to start a over 50's club longboard club ? Safety in numbers.....still feel 18 inside but the bones remind me i'm not,


Just recalled that i thought i was okay at skateboarding until we went camping one year and on the way to Weymouth for the day came across a concrete park on Portland Bill, a purpose built park that i had never ever seen before and some years later there was a indoor wooden park in Wolverhampton, i think the old Chubb building,
