I've not used either Gumtree, Loot or Ebay for a while to sell anything but wondering how things have moved on. I am selling lots of low value junk basically but I am interested as to who is the best to get rid of stuff with.
Ebay are interesting in that it's an auction but I remember lots of hidden fees last time I sold bits of an R1 I had left after crashing it.

My wife uses a Facebook sell and seek page and manages to sell pretty much anything within 24 hours, all local and cash too, do you have a local group?

We don't use ebay for selling at all any more, far too expensive and weighted in the scammers/idiots favour, Gumtree is ok but if you live in the sticks it can be a bit hit and miss.

Cheers for the heads up that's exactly what I'm looking for. Ebay are right thieving gits, what happened they used to be the go to guys for cheap tat to get rid off.

Unfortunately I do live in the sticks which is slightly troublesome when selling items but thankfully I'm kind of inbetween a few larger towns which can help if the buyer is willing to travel.

Stopped people having low price products and effectively making their money on the postage.

Remember, they, like our banking system, are only there to make money for shareholders, not to serve customers...

Ebay basically take about 13-15% including paypal fees, certainly adds up quickly.

I would determine price via ebay and sell via Gumtree/local FB page as mentioned, using Ebay as backup.

yikes

Been ages since I've sold on eBay but I've just used them to sell a nice pair of boots that I couldn't return after a mile of walking outside only to find that they made a previously undiagnosed foot condition extremely painful.

Paid £85 for the boots and sold them for £60 plus a tenner postage and packing (Which actually came to over £12) my mistake. Thought I had done well but not with a 15% charge frown

I didn't know that!

I will now have to increase my postage charges.

If it was anything remotely interesting or useful I'd put it on pistonheads. To be fair it's utter ste like old bike leathers, helmets and lots of other tat like army issue steel jerry can and plastic variant. Nothing to see here!

Which wont work as that's why they brought in the charge on postage - it was to stop people overcharging postage - so the more you charge, the more % of the postage they'll take.

Plus they've also further limited the "maximum" allowance for postal charges in most categories now as I found out the other week when trying to list an item with recorded delivery. Based on weight it was going to cost £8, but evidently eBay believe the maximum postage (based on their "buyer" perception / research data - not actual current RM pricing structure) for the item should be no more than £4.

TBH based on them now charging a % on all postage, it's just their way of introducing a blanket free P&P on all listings within the next year so it's easier now just to list with a higher start price that includes the postage.

The only problem I have noted on Gumtree is that if you list your telephone no. on the advert there is a hike in unwanted marketing calls usually from abroad afterwards.

They obviously use the site to skim phone numbers.

Also make the most of the free basic adverts (they already charge for premium ones) as i cannot see that lasting as guess who owns Gumtree - you guessed it - ebay

I tend to use Gumtree first, and if I get no interest after around 3 days, I put it on eBay. Alternatively, if all your low value junk items are related, you can list them as a joblot in a single listing on eBay, for the ease of getting rid of the stuff quickly, although you'll make less cash.

I always have luck with gumtree, and Friday ad.

Ebay is far to expensive to sell on now.

Yes , I think that is their strategy.

Gumtree though, Surely that is only for local face to face sales?

No one actually sends money and expects to get something posted in return?
