I just sold my first thing on e bay this week. Not a car just a set of off road wheels so not sure if its the same. I was unaware of the %age they take of the final purchase price. Sold them for £250 and the took near enough 10% of this. Then as I used paypal they then took a fee on this and as it was a first sale I have to wait 21 days to get at my money even though the wheelx have been collected no problem.

As said not sure if its the same with vehicles but to me was rather expensive way of selling.

Be prepared to have your time wasted when selling a car.

Be completely honest in your ad and specify the T&Cs clearly - deposit within 24hr, collection in xx days.

If you set it up as a "Buy it now" you will have people trying to organise viewings or to buy the car outside of the auction. Usually if you kindly ask them to bid/purchase through the proper channel they suddenly lose interest. Never take your advert down until you have at least a deposit in your account and if they back out of the sale, report them.

Oh and prepare to be asked time and time again details that are in the advert smile

Don't take a full payment via PayPal, only a deposit.

Paid via Paypal and they collected them?!?! I hope that you got proof of collection!

In my experience the best way to sell a car on ebay is with a classified ad. That way you don't have the idiots who bid and win the auction never to be heard from again.

Have you listed the car in PH? I'd expect a car like that to get far more attention (from the tight type if person) on here than eBay

Agreed, do this.
PH is (to me) the best place to sell any remotely interesting car.

If you want to sell a car on ebay then just use it as a form of advertisement, like any other website. Put it up as a classified ad, only take cash on collection (you can't say this in the ad though) and only remove the listing once you have the money in your hand. Any other way is too much hassle for little benefit.

Gumtree is pretty useful. I normally run an ad in Gumtree and ebay at similar times. Worth putting in the ebay ad that it's "advertised locally" Just make sure the ad is honest, but don't go overboard on listing every small blemish. It makes your car sound rubbish when the faults are normal.
You will get chancers and timewasters though, but this is pretty normal. Finally, end your auction early Sunday evening.

Then either your advert is terrible, or the car is incorrectly priced.

Aye, well-written and detailed ad (with good photos) makes all the difference.
Then there's pricing too.

Make sure your listing is nice and clear with correct spelling and punctuation.

Any listing I see that contains the word 'ect' screams 'tard.

Excellent advice. Most of the refund fiddles that abound on Ebay currently are made using Paypal. Ebay will always refund irrespective of the facts and the scammers have latched onto that.

Having said that I have used Ebay for many years feedback in the 000's about 99.5% favourable and I have never had a problem with any buyer or any seller on Ebay despite selling and buying an awful lot of classic cars and kit cars over the years. Ebay is an effective market and has enfranchised a great many small businesses who could not trade without this facility. But it is also an expensive system particularly with high value items.
