Check with the Uni student accommodation team, they will probably have a list of approved private landlords

Word of advise don't leave it to the last minute as your son will end up with the dross. You will also find that private landlords will start to agree letting a as early as January

Good luck

Simon, that's the trouble. People are already signing up and there is almost a panick buy going on. Agents are scare mongering by encouraging them to take properties quickly as it "won't last long"
Meaning they almost are not getting any choice to shop around.
I thought if someone here was a landlord it might cut out the crap, so to speak.

Do what they do in Bath, where mummy and daddy buy young Tarquin Nobcheesetthead a flat, and artificially inflate property prices...

ok, i studied there before the main campus moved over to gloucester. cheltenham is lovely, and st pauls is pretty much 100% students. the campuses in gloucester will provide any assistance you need. they have good relations with landlords in the surrounding areas.

get in touch with them asap and get him into a uni allocated house.

I wouldn't get too worried yet, there are always empty houses round Cheltenham as there is more student accommodation than there are students.

I'm going back for my final year in September and will start looking around February time (currently on placement).
I did exactly the same in my first year and it all worked out fine.

I'll be looking on http://www.glosstudentpad.co.uk/Accommodation

How does that make it artificial?
Surely, demand vs. supply dictates the price people are prepared to pay, an therefore the price of property?

I was based at FCH! 2003-2006 I was in Hardwick Halls first year then a grotty house on New Street (arse send of Lower High Street) for the rest. I can still remember the rent for my room in the house was £216.66 a month, all in. Happy days.

I left in 2002. Never got into halls, so stayed in student houses until one of my friends parents bought a house for him opposite the 24hr tescos.

Loved gold cup week every year and the drinking room out the back of the frog in town.

Cheers for all the replies.
It'll give him confidence that he won't loose out in the current stampede

Is he going into the first year? If so I'd MASSIVELY recommend halls - that's where you make your friends that stick with you for the next 3 years (and some for life) - especially at Cheltenham as the student population is a lot lower than other uni's. I was on the Pitville campus (which was arts based) despite studying business, much fun was had by all. A close friend use to be the head of the Student Uni there and now runs part of the NUS - drop me a line if you need more info smile
