As the title says, what were your career aspirations when you left college/uni etc and what are you actually doing now?

From a young age i wanted to be an architect, used to draw all sorts of buildings.

Still kick myself for thinking 7 years at uni was too long and not worth it. Im a property developer now but would still love to look up at a spanking new building and think " yeah i designed that"

A scientist. Fascinating job, st career, as I discovered while working on my PhD. Took a job in software development while I finished writing up, by the time I had my thesis accepted I wasn't willing to take the pay cut to go back into science.

What career path did you take to achieve that?

I did a placement while at uni at a company designing race tracks. I had a hand in finalising the designs for a few and the Bahrain kart track I helped out on has been built now. Used to do a lot of the same for various games on PC while at college too so I thought I'd go back into that when I finished my engineering degree at uni. Much happier working in engine development in the automotive industry now though, far more interesting.

Rich.

Wasn't too bothered how I got there, just know I didn't want to do anything difficult or illegal which would probably explain why I am nowhere near my goal.

Marine Biologist, studied it but got too tied up doing to much working and not enough studying. Now an equal partner in my folks shop so could be worse. Once I've earned enough and feel comfortable I'll go back to studying, Science was my first love.

As a chemist with a PhD, working a job that pays not great and leaves me with a long commute...I wonder what else I can apply my self to.

I wanted to be an automotive enginner. I was st at maths when I was at school so couldnt really progress and followed chemistry. I got better at maths and its no longer a mystery to be avoided - I reckon I would make a fine engineer but at this age I'm not sure I want to go back and re-educate - certainly not at university anyway.

I wanted to be a real estate developer - new builds ideally....

All after living near permanently in a building site growing up (dad's a QS/PM)....

I'm now 24 and work in property/commercial finance, although its on the front office restructuring/relationship management side. Hopefully I'll be able to move into origination soon and on from there!

I wanted to be a car mechanic at school. Loved cars and I was not good academically & did not enjoy school.

However, I got involved with computers at home (ZX81, C64 etc) and found I enjoyed the programming side, also found it paid better than a car mechanic, so this is was the career I followed.

Always wondered where I would be now if I had become a mechanic.

always wanted to be a Vet, got ***t grades at school, swore I would never be on the dole so re took exams, still not quite good enough so decided I would just get any job I could until I could find something I wanted to do so 3 years working for a company making fireproof draught excluders (same company as Grandad), got bored and was offered a job at a pet shop a Vet friend was setting up (took the job), 3 years later, going nowhere, shop not doing so well so looked for another job. Neighbour mentioned that they were looking for a new person to come and work in the lab where he worked, got the job, 25 years later and I am still here! though the job has morphed from scientist to health and safety bod/general dogsbody!
P.S. the pet shop closed 6 months after I left.

Oh dear. Did the Vatican find out about your stting in the woods?

I had no aspirations of any career path when younger. So it all went to plan.
