Hi all,

I've just sold a steering wheel with airbag on fleabay, as it was never going to go back on it's original car, but now I note that Royal Mail refuse to carry airbags (and heaps of other items).

The buyer is also in the UK so it isn't leaving the country.

Can anyone recommend a courier for this job? Or have you just used Royal Mail anyway?

There must be a way as there are hundreds of airbags being sold on eBay by breakers with £5-10 postage on the price.

Thanks.

Indeed - no explosive is postable.

Simple. Don't tell RM what's in it...

Royal mail and all couriers that ive used have a list of prohibited items air bags are on of them. Could just not tell them about the air bag I suppose.

Don't tell 'em.

Don't put a return address on it either!

Apparently a couple of places will send them but only if they are in metal containers

They get posted in big metal cages, something that's larger than an exploded airbag so if it does go off, it doesn't actually leave the cage.

Here's a tip, OP: set off the airbag before you post it so it us no longer hazardous post. Then Royal Mail will take it no probs. Winner biggrin

I sent one by Royal Mail parcels, they didn't ask so I didn't tell em . It didn't spontaneously explode and nobody died at all, job done.

I know somebody who posted one, it went off & injured a PO worker, it was traced back to him & the Police got involved.
He wasn't prosecuted but got a massive rollocking.

I work for a large express carrier, so am pretty well versed in dangerous goods. You can ship pretty much anything you want, but you need to make sure it's documented, hence handled correctly. Unfortunately, it will cost you quite a bit more than a standard royal mail package.

Normal, non-dangerous shipments get bumped about a LOT during the sorting process, with chutes and slides and a lot of manual handling. The only way to avoid your shipment injuring someone is to ensure the package is strong enough to contain the mass expansion of the airbag.

Choose one of the premium carriers DHL, UPS, TNT. Tell them what you're shipping and stump up the cash.

Dont be responsible for injuring someone or you may be faced with a civil law suit as well as potential criminal proceedings. Particularly given this thread..
