First sentence in the article said:
World War II was a horrible conflict...... Known as the Great War, this confl.....
If the first sentence contains such a basic and glaring error, I suspect the rest of it is made up too.
Call me cynical.

First line leads no confidence to the writer having a brain, but maybe they got confused with the great patriotic war, which is the way the Russians etc refer to it.

Had a chance to have a brief chat with General Rick Hillier last week who told me the story of Smokey Smith in WWII.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Smith

I hadn't heard it before but it's great.

Summary:

He stopped the tanks as detailed in the story on the Wiki, during the next parade he got promoted to Corporal. He went out that evening and celebrated with his mates, got in a fight and the next day was demoted back to Private.

Later on he again got promoted to Corporal, went out to celebrate, him and his mate stole a truck to get back to camp, crashed it into a ravine and left it there. The next day he was demoted back to Private.

It seems during his military service he was promoted a total of nine times, and demoted by the same amount.

When he was going to London to receive his VC from the King, the night before they locked him in jail to stop him going out and celebrating, then two of the largest MP's escorted him to London and the gates of Buckingham Palace.

I like his style.
